Look what my dumba** did.
Was attempting to hang my plasma on the wall in my house I've owned now for 83 hours (as of 11:00PM eastern) and drilled the main hot water line coming from the water heater before the first "T".

Called my emergency line (my dad (low108)) an he rushed over to save the day. We made it to Lowe's before they closed at 9:00PM to grab a Gatorbite fitting, and I helped him get it on and now all is well. Well, except for the big hole that needs patching, and the TV that's still laying in the floor.

Drilling a hot water pipe must be my specialty, this would be my second fiasco. First time there was more pressure and 6 figure art that could have been ruined. TV is fine, laying across the room on its blanket.

Don't feel so bad. The day we moved into our house, Genius here thought it would be easier to drive the Penske rental truck around the back to unload the stuff for that side of the house. I went through the top of the septic tank and had to get towed out by heavy equipment. I think it was over $4K for a new septic cover and old cover chunk removal from the depths of goo and to fix the truck because I cracked the differential housing and broke the rear U-joint. HH

At least you still have all your fingers and toes I'm presuming, so it could've been worse.

Stuff like that builds great memories.
We got a kitten from our friend's barn. His he was tiny, tiny (half the size of the palm of your hand -- Momma kicked him out of the nest) and could barely walk.
I was out of town for work and my wife works from home. She took the kitten upstairs while she worked, knowing he was too small to go down the stairs.
Later, she realized the cat was gone. He HAD to be upstairs. She searched for hours. Then she found behind a bookcase...
...where we took the heater register cover off of the wall, so we could run the ethernet cable upstairs to her office. Sure enough. The poor cat was in the ductwork in the basement (two stories down!).
She had to call some HVAC guys for an 'Emergency Call'. They had to cut many holes big enough to get a head and an arm into the duct to try to get the cat (which was scared and kept running into a different part of the duct).
So... a free kitten cost me $200 and we didn't even have him a full day yet.

Put a hot water tap on the TV and place some coffee and tea fixings on the entertainment center. Your problem just became a feature that your friends will envy. Eric

Didn't think of that. Any movie watched that has either a rain or steam scene will have a realism unsurpassed by anything your neighbors' TV can do. HH

I would assume he was drilling through a wall covered in sheetrock at the time and had no idea there was a metal plate or a water line there.

The purpose of the metal plate is to offer a resistance when drilling or driving sheetrock screws to make you aware of plumbing or electrical behind the wall. Its very purpose is to prevent exactly what happened here.

I have people up here every summer who want me to drive the Kenworth with a full load on it around the house to dump in the back yard. I always question them about the septic and old log cribs that were used for same. They are usually clueless. Hope I never have to drag her out of that. Lots of transient oilfield workers here with no clue about the history of the home they bought.

Lesson:
Hasty work with Bravias can get you in hot water.

When your TV starts smoking, use the hot water to put it out. Unless it's a Bravia.

Pro tip for new home builds...take pics of where pipes and wires are before the drywall goes up. Comes in handy later. I know it wouldn't have helped in this case, so I'll just add that gator bite/shark bite fitting are expensive, but worth it.

Plasma TV? People still buy those???
I just went to CES and didnt see a single plasma TV. LCD is on its last legs and LED seems to be the popular tech.
The buzz at CES was 4k (aka 4x 1080p) and OLED (aka organic LED)
