hearing protection
What is the best electronic hearing protection?
I think it is time to upgrade.
Is there a side beside comparison out there?

The top offerings from Peltor (Comtac II) and MSA Sordin (Supreme Pro X) are generally very close to each other in overall comfort and quality, I have a slight preference for Sordins because the scalloped shells allow a better cheek weld on long guns.
Regardless of which one you chose, make sure to get the optional gel earmuffs seals, for superior comfort (the single best upgrade you can put on an earmuff, for maximum comfort), trust me on this.
There is a great deal on the MSA Sordin here:
http://www.srstactical.com/communica...x/75302*x.html
There's a good deal on the Comtacs on that site as well (but not as great as the deal they have on the Sordins)
And always use lithium AAA (AA for the Comtac) batteries. No alkalines, not even the better brands. I lost my previous Comtac II (I'm wearing these in my avatar) to a leaky battery..
Edited to add: Glockfish, check you browser settings dude, they work fine.

I have the Peltor Tactical Sport and really like them. Picked them up for around $125.00 if I remember correctly.

I don't think I am going to find what I want.
1. Must not clip conversations.
2. Must use AA or AAA or 123 batteries.
3. Must have forward facing microphones. (I hunt with my ears as much as my eyes. I don't think the side microphones will allow me to do this.)
4. Must go in back of head not over. (Over doesn't work well with other head gear.)
5. Must have input and output for radio. Music for when alone at range. Microphone when not alone in teh woods.

My Pro-Ears Dimension 1s are awesome, not cheap at all but worth every penny.

+1 for the MSA Sordin Supreme Pro-X. If you get them make sure to get the Gel seals.

The Sordins have always had a great reputation. When I bought my Pro-Ears the Sordins were still make in Sweden and were quite a bit more money.

The regular Supreme Pro X has a 3.5mm audio jack.
If you need a full com set with microphone, there is this:

True, but I didn't think I would be in ouch territory.

I kind of like mine, but the pathetically low NRR of 18 can be problematic. Don't even dream of using them stand-alone indoors. I used them outside a bit and am generally happy with that, but when the guy next to me had a 5.56 with a muzzle brake it felt like I was getting hit in the head with a rubber mallet.
They have their place, but IME that place is limited by the low NRR.
I'm still in the trial phase with my next selection...Howard Leight Impact Pro. Same basic idea as the impact sport, but bigger/bulkier and much more effective at reducing noise. NRR of 30! And still only $68

I don't understand how something with an NRR of 21 can be considered the best. I know a lot of guys really like their MSA Sordin ____ electronic earmuffs, but the NRRs are all 18-21. I'm very skeptical based on that. I damn near got a pair of Sordin Supreme, but that NRR....notsureifwant

I have suppressors which do better than that so....I think they are off the buy list.
Remember, I am looking to get a 50BMG. A noise reduction of 19 is still going to be LOUD.

PMFJI...
What would be the (theoretical) noise reduction for "33db" foam plugs under a set of "21db" ear muffs?

Except for battery type (and microphone), proears meets these requirements, they use "N" batteries. I have liked mine for the last 5 years or so.

Using "N" batteries is the only fault I can find with my Pro-Ears. They aren't always easy to find and quite a bit more expensive than AAs or AAAs.

Not sure, but I always double up, usually with Surefire Earpros, even with the high dollar earmuffs.
I've found this essential to keep the shooters' eyes from blinking as the gun goes off, which is essential when you want to advance your shot calling skills and overall speed (knowing where the bullet will hit by seeing a continuous sight picture as ignition occurs, and then being ready for the following shot the very moment the front sight settles back into the rear notch).
