Hows everyone's hunting season shaping up? I haven't had time in the stand yet but based on the cameras & scrapes showing up activity is on the rise. Acorns are dropping and seems to be a great crop on the white oaks.

I've got a couple weeks until I can really get out seriously so I still in prep mode and watching the cameras.

My combined deer, elk & bear season starts in one week. I have a buck tag but am thinking about also getting a doe license. We're feeding raw game meat to our kittens now so any extra meat is useful. I'm hopeful about connecting with both deer and elk this year.

On Monday, I killed a Pronghorn doe and finished butchering it today. We also made 12 lbs. of Italian sausage from scraps of the Pronghorn, some from last years elk, and a pork shoulder. It's really good! Fried sausage patties and cold beer makes all the work worthwhile.

My season started with a lot of rain and standing waters. I've seen a few deers in the high grounds trying to stay wet and a spot a smaller double forked buck that I might try in a few weeks when muzzleloader season starts.

Here's my "toothpick" for 2012, SEFLA 4point buck taken with muzzleloader at 55yards during our opening.

I also recovered the bullet, it was lodge on the fall side right under the skin. Sabot was found when I was walking the deer off, not to damage but it lost a few pellets in flight. See how the bullet and sabot should be before fired on the right

Congratulations on all the success. Trail camera pictures are looking promising this friday will be my first day in a stand I am hoping for some of my own. I have some sausage making supplies from last season I need to use up.

Sometimes it's just dumb luck. Walked out of the woods this AM into a big field and there he was: the 8 point my neighbor had been seeing on his trail cam and looking for all black powder season! Dropped him with my 760 .308.

Boy, is my neighbor gonna be ticked when he hears about this!

Our "early primitive weapon doe season" opened up yesterday. I went yesterday afternoon but only saw a small yearling and little buck so I didn't get to shoot. Went to my farm this evening and ended up shooting a doe with my "primitive weapon", a TC Encore in 35 Whelen. For those of you that don't know, in Mississippi our "primitive weapons" can be single shot, exposed hammer rifles over 35 caliber so most people hunt with either Handi Rifles, CVA single shots or TC Encores in 35 Whelen, 35 Rem, 358 win, 44 mag, 444 Marlin, and 45-70. Certainly nothing primitive about them but I would rather shoot a rifle than a muzzleloader simply for maintenance reasons! Anyways here are a few pictures from today

Pretty good so far.
I ordered a Ten Point Wicked Ridge Invader crossbow and got it about a week before archery season started here.

That thing shoots incredibly tight groups out to 40 yds.
I couldn't get out the first Sat but did go out the Mon AM of the first week. I got a small 4X2 buck about 8AM.
Last Sat, I got a doe from the same tree. Both shots were 25 yds. Buck was quartering away. Doe was quartering to. Both bolts went through the deer. The Buck ran about 40yds. The doe about 50. The bolts hit dead on where I aimed. The Spitfire 100's did their job and sliced up a lung each. I was about 25 feet up in my old Loggy Bayou.

I found both bolts intact and bloody. I've never tried sharpening an arrow blade so may order replacement cutting edges.

I have 2 more doe tags and am heading out this last Sat to a spot I generally rifle hunt.

I used to hunt in southern Ohio every year. Christian Bowhunters of America used to sponsor a bowhunt at Tar Hollow. Really enjoyed that! Abundant acorns here, along with a bumper crop of persimmons. Its muzzleloader season here, so we will see. I let multiple doe and a couple small bucks walk during the archery season, and opening day of smokepole. Just now starting to get right with serious chasing. Good luck to ya. Be safe.

I grew up in Alabama. Our "primitive weapons" could include a spear! I did try it. Never got an opportunity for a deer with it. Ha. I stuck with my recurves for years, then went on to wheel bows. Alabama just recently(last four/five years) allowed use of optics on a Muzzleloader. lol.

I've got a buddy that hunts several times a year up in Missouri with a spear! It's pretty crazy stuff haha..I'll see if I can dig up the video of him missing one last year with the spear!

Going like this. Went yesterday morning and got 2. Putting the meet in the freezer today.


I'm not all into hunting, so I'd count the main 13 points, but my brother, who is more of a serious hunter, says it has more like 16 or 17 scoreable points (over 1 inch).
