New 870 Express Tactical wont fit all shells
Just got a good deal on a 870 Tactical new and Remington's website claims 7 rounds 2&3/4 or 3" I can only get 5 3" in magazine and 1 chamber. Is this right? It's got the factory 2 shot extension.

A couple of things:
It might be that the guns acheives that 6+1 capacity with 2 3/4" shells only. I don't recall if that 6+1 is possible with 3" shells.
Assuming that it is obtainable with 3" shells, not all shells are 3" long. Some are more andothers are less. A 2 3/4" shell is supposed to be 70mm however very few of them are.
A final consideration might be the extension itself not being properly installed. I don't know if your good deal came from a friend or a dealer however sometimes the factory extension may not installed correctly. Go to Aippi's site for the the proper instructions on how to do it.

I got it at Dicks Sporting Goods it will do 6 2-3/4 no problem but their website description threw me off with the "holds 7 rounds of 2-3/4 or 3".

An important thing to remember is that 2.75 or 3 inches is the length of a fired hull. Unfired hulls can vary in length depending on how the end is crimped.

Well, I liked my answer better because it used more words.

Sounds to me like you should double check to make sure the dimples in the mag tube are gone. My Express had them and they had to be removed, now it takes 7 rounds.
Take the barrel off and look just below the threads on the mag tube.

My 870 with a 2 shell extension can fit 7 + 1 of 2 3/4" shells. Is there a reason I should stick to 6 in the mag?

Whatever fits, fits. 2 3/4" shells [I]are[I] supposed to be that long aka 70mm. Meaure a few of them and you'll see that very few of them are that long, even from a single manufacturer.

As long as your gun functions 100%, I see no problem. (Is your magazine spring the correct one, as far as length goes?). Also, make sure that the follower is installed.

Yup...5 of the 3" magnum shells in the +2 magazine is correct, but here are a couple other thoughts:
1. Make sure that the inner top edge of the magazine extension is smooth (where it mates with the magazine tube), and doesn't have a burr on it or a sharp edge, so that the magazine spring doesn't hang up there. (My TacStar +2 extension had an inner sharp edge, but a little careful filework and sandpaper to slightly bevel the sharp edge made it smooth and function at 100% with 6 rounds of 2 & 3/4" shells.).
2. Make sure that you have the correct magazine spring installed...Especially the length.

I'm using the spring that came with the mag extension. But I noticed binding while using the short grey colored follower so on a whim I thought I'd try the black colored spring retainer as a follower.
The grey one would bind in the area of the screw threads on the mag tube while inserting the sixth round. The black one, used as a follower, slides back and fourth slicker than snow on ice. I suppose because its longer it stays aligned better. I have to look into getting a propper follower b4 it goes into service.
The pattern is 00 Buck shot at 8 - 9 paces.

It looks to be a Tac Star. On the back of the package it says it is a division of Lyman.

Just checked both +2rnd extensions, one factory and one Wilson.
Both hold the same.
5-3" or 6-2 3/4"
But they will hold 5-3" and 1-2 3/4".
Thats what I have in the one beside the bed.
1-3"00buck in chamber + 1-2 3/4"PD1 + 5-3"00buck
1 + 1 + 5 = 7
Hope thats enough.
