Just had a "friend" call me wanting to sell me some ammo

My sister-in-laws boyfriend calls me up and says he heard I was looking for some .223 ammo. My sister-in-law told me previously that he had 20 cases or so saved up; so I said sure, I'm always looking for ammo (which is true).

He then tells me that he has been checking around and that a case of .223 was going for around $700 but he had some "Russian stuff" he would sell me for only $600 a case.

He then tells me that every LGS he has talked to says that they aren't going to have any more, and that he would hold a case back for me when I decided I needed it.

I told him to go pound sand but when I felt like getting screwed I'd give him a call.

Tell him that if he finds buyers at that price, you'll happily sell him the "good" stuff for $500/case.

It is possible the guy meant well.
Perhaps he was giving the OP first shot, before he sells it for what he thinks the current value is. He might be surprised at what others consider a good price.

Today I brought my AR to the range to sight in the new Eotech/magnifier setup. I grabbed 4-30rd mags filled with American Eagle XM193. It's sad that I'm looking at a 1000rd case of it I bought last year for $289 and I'm afraid to open it... My LGS always had a pallet of them 6' high... If I only knew then what I know now, I would have bought 100 cases or so... Or maybe just 4 or 5 for myself.

Today at the Market Hall gun show in Dallas 5.56 was $1/round. That was or the 1,000 round cases, who knows that smaller boxes were.

I was at Dunhams Sporting Goods tonight and they had 20ct boxes of .223 for $8.99. I was surprised to see probably 100 boxes on the shelf.

I think it's amazing that a small caliber, economic to shoot rifle, has become the topic of such a price gouge clusterfuk... Anyone who pays $1/round for this stuff is an idiot and will feel pretty aewsome when the price/availablity goes back to normal in a few months...

You call $600 for a case of Tula doing someone a favor?

You might think he meant well offering it to me first, but all the nonsense he was giving me about how it was no longer going to be available (seriously?) and that $700 is the current price at gun stores tells me that he knew what he was saying wasn't true and that he thought I was too stupid to know otherwise.

Some desperate person flush with cash might pay that online but no gun stores are selling ammo at that price. I was at Academy the other day and they had cases of Monarch brass .556 for somewhere around $330 I think. The line was deep and they were out by the time I got to the front, but still, it was there for others at that price.

Hah! Just cracked open a can of green tip I bought at the same time as the XM193. It's a 420rd can on stripper clips. They were selling them for $149 a can every day and always had stacks of them... I reloaded the 4 mags of XM193 that I dumped at the outdoor range today because like an idiot I realized I can only shoot green tip outdoors and waisted the 120rds of XM193...
