Dear Congressman,
I am a registered Republican who lives in Congressional District 37, Boulder, CO.
This message is to inform you of my concern regarding gun control legislation that will be introduced in the wake of Newtown, CT's tragic school shooting.
I am strongly opposed to new laws that would ban or restrict semi-automatic rifles, including, but not limited to, rifles that look like military weapons. I am equally opposed to legislation that would ban or restrict handguns, and/or firearm magazines. I am also strongly opposed to any new law requiring registration of firearms.
Banning, limiting or requiring registration of firearms penalizes law-abiding citizens like me but accomplishes nothing to prevent the mentally ill and criminals from obtaining guns. I am a retired business executive who has enjoyed shooting sports and collecting firearms for more than 50 years; my guns are legally owned, properly secured and never misused.
Proposed legislation by Democrats will use the Newtown incident as an excuse to pursue their long-standing anti-gun agenda. This effort must be stopped, now, in the interest of protecting freedoms provided by the Constitution.
The path to reducing use of firearms by criminals and the mentally ill lies in aggressive enforcement of existing laws and improvements in our mental health system.
I sincerely hope, and expect, that you will protect the rights of law abiding gun owners by working to defeat new gun control legislation.
Sincerely,
John Smith

This letter was obviously crafted with Republican Congressmen in mind, so editing would be necessary for Democrats. The important thing is for every gun owner to send a message, long or short, as soon as possible.
