Explaining "today's life" to someone from the past
Interesting question:
If someone from the 50's suddenly appeared today what would be the most difficult thing to explain to them about life today.

That I have this device not much bigger than a book that, can, at the push of a few buttons, provide up all sorts of knowledge.
And that my primary use for that device is to argue with complete strangers and look at porn.

I am from the past (75).
One advantage/disadvantage of living so long is you see first hand how it was and how it is.
And I am greatly disappointed in how the American people have turned out.
Just as a good example, if years ago you would have said that half the American people would become so out of touch with reality that they would become such self centered ***holes to even think that such a worthless racist POS as obama had the slightest qualification to be President of the US.
Unbelievable.
The thing is,
if all your young life has been spent standing in a cess pool up to your neck in ***t, you think that's a normal atmosphere. Throw you a few trinkets like a cell phone and a Credit card, that you can use to further enslave yourself and you don't even pay attention to the waves that fill your mouth and ears full of ***t.

I would tell them blacks can now use our water fountains and vote, Jews can join country clubs and women seek their own careers. HH

I never lived in the 50's, but I would imagine that people are far more attached to things these days, far less connected with their neighbors, friends and families.
Spending, buying and crying are three most favorite activities of the modern man.
We also (and I mean globally) gave up on our freedoms in order to feel more secure.
Health care improved, cars are better and guns are way cool.
I'm trying my best not to look behind, because it's not helping with every day life, but I guess once in a while everyone should do it to realize where he/she really is.

Great post. Those who didn't live it and think they know how it was, based on MSM rewrite or the Re-Education camp textbooks have, in fact, no clue how much has been lost.

that the USSR destroyed itself defeating us and we destroyed ourselves from within (with the social programs that people from the 50s would vote into law)

I think that I would be embarrassed to admit to the time traveler that for many in our nation, logic and accountability are foreign concepts. The country certainly bears little resemblance to the USA of the 50's as regards our current political and social state.

Except for a handful of things, like how we interact through social media, and the tools that allow us to do it....I think they would be surprised at how many things haven't changed, or changed slightly .
The 50's weren't all Leave it to Beaver types, there was and still is city decay, rampant crime, poverty, homeless, sickness, gangsters, etc... and maybe they would be surprised that we haven't yet cured many of the social ills in our time.
People have always rushed into projections of our future as improved humans and the human condition, but things don't move that fast, and little changes.
I am out...damned greasers....

I would tell them we have hyper inflation. Queers are now called "Gay" and it is no longer used for a term meaning "happy" and that the media thinks it is grand to try to get them to marry in the National Cathedral and are doing so. You can't buy firearms in a hardware store anymore, and gun owners are treated like the most evil people that walked the earth. The President is a half white man who claims to be black and he rules like the King of England by making Law by Executive order, and that congress has become nothing but a parliment reminescent of England.
Authority is no longer respected by anyone. Probably about that time I would have to coax them to take the revolver out of their mouth I would suspect.

The most difficult thing to explain would not be how is is but rather why it is not how a person from the fifties thought it would be.
The question would no doubt be, Why don't we all have on comfortable uniforms?
