Sling Advice

I need advice/recommendations on a sling for my varmint gun. It is a 18" SS barrel that I am mounting a Harris bipod on. Primarily for coyotes (possibly some OK/TX hogs in the future). Our typical hunt involves 10+ set ups and calls over the course of the day. We typically walk 3-5 miles (sometimes more) during our hunt. I am looking for something that will be comfortable to carry, but that I can also use for stability during the shot.

VTAC or Vickers padded 2-point.

These are the two I'd look at as well.

I've used both, like the Vickers better.

Padded vtac, I like it a lot better than the vickers offering. Vtac allows you to crank down as tight as you want, vickers is limited

For law enforcement use, I prefer a single point, nothing else. For hunting, I like a traditional two point sling better.

If you're going to be walking into a hunting area w/ that firearm a padded sling will be nice to have.

They're also adjustable so you can cinch it up while on foot then let it out to go prone or whatever other position you shoot from.

How do you secure your rifle when handcuffing? I tried a single point for awhile, but they are a PITA for patrol use

I have a padded vtac 2 point and I love it. I have it set up for transition to 1 point as well.

http://www.glocktalk.com/forums/show....php?t=1442405 is my setup.

LaRue makes an Optimized Sniper Sling (not trying to be a sniper, just kill some coyotes) that intrigues me. I like the way it incorporates into the bipod & allows you to tighten down on it and create more support.

Does anyone have any experience with this sling? I know that LaRue makes quality gear and lots of folks trust their products with their lives.

Slings??

Who needs slings?

Click the image to open in full size.

I do get how a sling can assist with stabilization, but I've quit using one. I found other ways to cheat using other toys.

It's a matter of preference. There is no perfect answer.

Got a Vickers for my Barnes Precision AR-15 after seeing their demonstration videos on Youtube. Very well thought out sling that does more than I would have thought. Quite versatile.

Using a good single point, it's easy. We use CQB/Spectre shrouded bungee style. Grab the rifle just forward of the magwell, and place it in the small of your back. It stays there. I can bend over, search, cuff, etc. Rifle stays put until I reach for it.

Ah gotcha, I had a BFG single point and the only thing that I did well with it was hitting myself in the nuts haha

1 point SUCKS for anything except CQC with a team.

2 point traditional leather is probably best for static shooting with traditional positions. There is a reason it is used at national matches. Nylon is easier to take care of and is cheaper. The quick adjust nylon does have some advantages in the field.

The 3 point Ching sling is probably best for quick acquisition and fixed positions as a total, BUT it can get in the way of the quick mag changes.

For those of you who need a padded sling, please turn in your man card.

High end single points rock in the hands of a trained user. Low end, ribbon style single points do actually suck. If you haven't trained to use single point, if you carry a six foot long rifle, or if you fail to adjust the sling properly (wearing it closer to the navel than the upper chest), they can be a handful.

Can any of the tactical slings be used to stabilize a shot?
I have used the M1907 and the M1 canvas sling in competition shooting. They can both be used to carry the rifle and also for stabilizing a shot.

An adjustable 2-point can be, you just have to use it differently. I usually hook the sling under my elbow and crank down the sling so it's tight around my back and along the rifle. It may not work as well as a dedicated offhand shooting sling, but it still works well.

That's good to know. I was just thinking about using an M1 sling on my carbines.

When using a sling for stability, rather than carrying:

For a AR with a free floated barrel and sling attachment not on the barrel (and traditional sporting rifles), I like the plain old M1 Garand sling in nylon or cotton. I mark the sling for either "hasty" or "traditional cinch" length locations. I also use a detachable fitting on the front - it makes it easier to set-up for the "traditional cinch" method.

For non-free floated, I don't use sling support as it can be detrimental to accuracy, ie. variations in mechanical barrel loading effects accuracy.
