I know some folks reload to support their sport shooting habit, but the greater percentage rely on retail store ammo. Frankly, if folks can't get ammo to shoot in GSSF, the number of entrants will decline sharply.

And you have to wonder if someone as image conscious as Gaston Glock might just pull the plug on civilian sales.

I have enjoyed GSSF for 10 years, but we are being painted as "crazies" by those who see our brand of pistol, and its sporting genre, as dangerous.

Let's hope we can survive this onslaught of undeserved scorn.

I don't know how things are in Texas, but ammo is still readily available here in California. Or at least, I have not experienced any issues.

There is a run on ammo right now. But it will hit the wall and supplies will come back up. Larger question is will a tax be put on ammo and if so how much.

It is Christmas time. Yes, there are always the panic sales, but a lot of folks are buying gifts.

Retail ammo got very scarce in 2009 also, right after Obama got elected. I was able to buy 9mm at Walmart up until about March, but after that it was almost impossible. One of the primary things that prompted me to start reloading.

The scarcity right now has nothing to do with the recent school shooting, but Obama's re-election. It's possible that something will come out of the shooting (revival of the AWB ban), but don't see it affecting ammo supplies.

It's been business as usual at Gander Mountain in Roanoke, Virginia where I work part time. No shortages or price increases.

I have sold a lot of shotguns, youth long guns and rifle/scope combos for Christmas gifts.

Best sellers include the Remington 770 combo in .243 and the Ruger youth 10/22.

It's been kind of a perfect storm not just for ammo, but guns as well. First the election results triggered fears that Obama in his second term would enact some form of gun restrictions, and post election the Democrats feeling empowered accelerated concern among gun owners. Now we've had a rash of shootings, with the last one being so unimaginably sick that new gun regulations are almost a given, so it's understandable that there is a run on ammo and guns. Ammo manufacturers should be gearing up and hopefully by spring supplies will be back to normal.

Question for DannyR.

During the Brady Ban period, did GSSF require the 10 round only magazines for full size pistols, like a G17, or could you just load pre-ban magazines with 10 rounds?

Hard to second guess what may happen but I'm curious as to how things changed 1994-2004 when restrictions were in place.

Pistols, including the G17, made after September 1994 came with 10 round magazines. I still have 1 or 2 10-round G17 mags. All competitions can be shot with 10-round magazines.

GSSF allowed any magazine, pre-ban or ban. GSSF is a 10+1 sport. One just could not buy any new normal capacity magazines during that 10-year period. One could, and often did, purchase used pre-bans.

There is plenty of pistol ammo available retail/online. The shortage is rifle ammo, specifically .223/5.56. Everyone is panicking and going out and buying AR's and ammo afraid they will no longer be available.

A perfect example, Lucky Gunner just received 10 cases of 500 round PMC .223. They sent out an email stating that they were receiving .223 ammo and were updating their online inventory levels as they get ammo in. I was on their site and I quickly went to the .223 page. Started at 10 and every time I hit refresh the count went down 1. Took 15 seconds for them to sell out at $230 a case.

They have plenty of 9mm Blazer, Tul, Speer Lawman, Prvi Partizan, Fiocchi, and Federal bulk packs in stock though.

Most retail stores in Houston are out of any 556/223 ammo. New AR buyers and folks stockpilling have depleated supply. It's going to be a while before "normalcy" ever comes back in regards to ammo prices and availability.

That's not saying much. At least around here, Gander was one of the few places you could find ammo in stock during the last run on ammo...because it was like $40 for a box of 50 230gr FMJ.

Same at Cabelas in Charleston WV. But we have noticed a GIGANTIC increase in the sales of black rifles. Ammo here is plentiful with the exception of 5.56/.223.

My suggestion to every active shooter- now is the time to invest in a reloading set up and buy powder and primers. There will be attempts to ban or limit ammo at some level and reloading may be the only way to shoot regularly

I've got a stash of ammo in all calibers and will continue to shoot GSSF and USPSA until I reach a certain limit. After that I will be saving my stash. If I can't find reloading material or factory ammo then I guess I will be done with competition until things change. I was planning to do another appleseed and a few carbine classes, but now I think I'll just keep my ammo and train with my .22 rifle.

I don't think you really mean "active shooter", but a shooter who is active in the shooting sports.

I hadn't been doing any reloading in a few years and I posted a while back that I was thinking about selling my Dillon 550 - then my wife said, "with Obama reelected, you'd better keep it." I guess she was right. glad I didn't sell it, now.

Heck, I may need to buy some bullet molds, too.

I think about getting set up for reloading but for me time is a factor. It would be something I'd enjoy but not for right now.

As far as getting into it because of ammo shortages/restrictions, I'd have to see the law first. Hard to believe they would restrict me from buying a K of ammo but let me buy the primers and powder to make them. There have been a few cases where we've heard of a shooter (justified or not) being accused of "making death bullets in his basement".

Like I say, I want to see what law people in congress come up with before I contact Dillon.

I know they talked about competitive shooting requiring more ammo and not limiting that after the Aurora shooting here in CO, but who knows what will happen now.
