Employer wants my id and password?

If my current employer or a prospective employer wants the userid and password for my email, facebook and other on-line accounts, should I give it to them?

Is this right?

If you need the job and have nothing to hide go ahead. Personally I do not agree with that and I would not. If you can find a job elsewhere that is comparable then tell them to get lost.

If my current employer wanted my password to my email, I would tell them, thank you, but I’m not interested.

If I am interviewed with a possible new employer, I would decline. I understand that I wouldn’t get the job, but I wouldn’t want to work for an employer like that anyways. I believe in privacy.

If it were a new job, I would walk. Do you really want to work for a company that is that intrusive? If it were a company that you were with for a long time and they instituted this new policy, i would delete the account. At least that's my contingency plan should my company ever do this.

What kind of work do you do and why does he want it?
I'm just curious.

I can't see an employer even asking for that information, unless you work for some ultra super secret government agency and it's part of your job requirement.

..

Your employer most likely only has the right to view any work related accounts. When you were hired did your employer suggest if you took this job it required you to provide the information they asked for? Refer to your employee handbook.

I would open a hotmail or gmail account and have a long, difficult password then give them that one. If they ask why it's clean tell them you don't store anything. Lot of people don't use facebook, so say you don't facebook.

It's wrong that an employer asks for the information, but don't kick the job if there is a way to get around it.

Read your user agreements with those services. Most likely, sharing your login is a breach of those legally binding contracts, something that a law abiding company surely wouldn't want to do.

If I'm not mistaken< your company will be in a world of hurts if you file a complaint with Facebook. Sometime recently this was brought to the attention of their legal dept. an the response was that there will be legal consequences for the companies violating FB's corporate privacy terms.

Are the accounts business accounts or private and personal? I would not have an issue giving over business accounts I managed , it would not matter. Personal or having personal info ..no I'd fight it

I would literally tell them to kiss my ass if they asked me that. Don't really care what the job is.
