Thinking about an AK 47 - is this a good general purpose?
Hello,
Thinking about picking up an AK 47. Would probably spend most of its life in my closet, but it would be there in case of a martial law-type of situation. In that case, I could see it being used for defense against people, and maybe useful in taking a deer inside 100 yards.
I've debated back and forth between an AK and an AR and I've decided the AK is the way to go. After doing some research, I found plenty of options from Atlantic Arms. Here is the specific model I'm considering:

Is this a decent gun for the price and intent?
Thank you,
Jim

It is. WASRs are excellent rifles if properly assembled. The good thing about buying from Atlantic is that if something's jacked up (canted sights, crooked receiver, ect....) Atlantic will take care of you.

Don't under estimate the AK as an all around platform, they are great hunting/self defense weapons that hit hard, two weeks ago I took two hogs on the run with my Polish underfolder using Tula 7.62x39 124 gr sp ammo both shoulder hits dropped them DRT...

Nice!
Thanks for the info, gentlemen.
I see pictures of AK's with adjustable buttstocks - like those found on AR's. Is this a do-it-yourself kind of mod? Standard pull on AK's don't work for my wife.
Thank you again,
Jim

AK-47 - gun costs less, ammo costs less, battle proven to be reliable in the lousiest conditions.

even if the prices on them go up they will still be cheaper than a AR15 and the like. i doubt they would bump up an AK47 price by $200.00 and leave an AR15 price the same.

The AK linked would be a fun choice.
They are not less expensive to shoot though.

I have a Colt AR-15 and quite a bit of .223.
I have a Norinco Mak 90 and now a Yugo PAP M92 and quite a bit of ammo.
They both have their pluses and minuses.
.223 is more expensive and the DI Colt AR-15 fouls easier. But, magazines and ammo and are plentiful as they are a common LE and military tool. They are very accurate.
7.62X39 is cheap and readily available. The AK is not as accurate at the AR at distance, but it is also a harder hitting round. The AK does fine when dirty and abused. It is like the Glock of battle rifle world. Ugly, but reliable as the day is long. With the glut of AK's in the United States and across the world magazines aren't an issue either.
It all depends on what you are comfortable with.
My MAK 90 has a forged reciever and has never given me an issue except once a stove pipe jam. All you do with those, is brush the brass out of the way and keep on shooting.
My Colt AR has given me issues with reloaded ammo and made a catestrophic jam at a range. I will not longer use reloaded ammo. It is more finiky about what it likes to eat.
The AK eats 7.62x39 is any variety like candy.

Yep that's a great general purpose AK for only $599. Buy it.
AKs will never be cheaper.
7.62x39 ammo will never be cheaper.

The AK used in my video above is a WASR as well. The stock on that one is a CAA adaptor with a Magpul MOE stock. It's absolutely DIY----two screws hold the stock into the receiver of the AK.
How tall is your wife? The WASR will come with a Warsaw length stock which is pretty short as far as stocks go....

I'll second the Damage Industries brake. It performs well for its small size. The price is not bad either.

are they more expensive than an AR15? cheapest AR15 is still more exspensive than a basic AK-47.

$599.00 for "cheap" AK's and AR's are close to that for the "cheap" versions. The spread is closing quickly.

I'm seeing higher-end AKs' such are Arsenals, going for nearly a grand. Id say the prices are getting silly.

Who gives a damn that one AK is the same price as one AR? Hell, I can tell you one car is the same price as one truck. How does that help the person looking for the car?
OP... that rifle would serve you just fine.

OP, stay away from the CAA, TASCO, Tapco, Mako garbage people tend to throw on AKs. If you want a M4 style stock look into VLTOR's adapter or ACE has some good products as well. Rifle Dynamics has an adapter as well that sells for a decent price.
------------
The misconceptions on AKs and ARs is tiering. Apples to Apples, steel to steel they are w/i pennies of each other.
Don't blame the firearm because you can't reload correctly.

If you are interested in a general purpose AK you cant really beat a GP WASR 10/63 (the better of the WASR's). GP even stands for general purpose, lol.
Watch this video I made. It might be helpful for anyone new to WASR's? Im no expert but I enjoyed making it for potential WASR shoppers.
