"promise you won't get mad."
what in the hell is the point of starting a conversation with those words? you know it's going to piss off the listener or else you wouldn't have had to start that way, and all it does is act as a trigger to instantly spike their blood pressure and defensive mechanisms.
it's never "don't get mad, but i bought way too much beer." or
"don't get mad but i invited my sorority sisters over to experiment"
it's always "don't get mad but i wrecked the car" or "don't get mad but i invited my bi-polar cousin and her fat slob of a husband to stay in our already cramped house for the next 3 weeks for the holidays"
JOY TO THE FLIPPIN WORLD!!

It's a teenager thing as well;
I have a teenager, and he's a great kid and never really any trouble, but I have heard those words from him a time or two.....

I never start sentences that way, but I do frequently say to my wife, "promise not to laugh at me too much" and tell her something stupid I did.
It never works. She usually laughs until she cries.

"Promise you won't get man, but...."
"NO, no....hold it right there. I not only DO NOT promise that I won't get mad, bit I DO promise that there is a high likelyhood that I am gonna beat your ass."
Keep your bad news to yourself, I don't wanna hear it.

I just never agree to not get mad. Problem solved.

Hahahaha nobody has ever told me that before!! If my girlfriend tells me something that's going to piss me off, it might as well be through a text. That's funny!! "don't get mad everybody, I bought too much beer."

I promise I won't get mad. I'm already mad in anticipation of whatever you are going to tell me.

i was telling my uncle about this earlier and i like his response. whenever someone starts with "promise you won't get mad..." he responds with "ok but you have to promise not to file charges when this conversation is over."

I will start with something of "don't say anything until I am finished." People like to interrupt on hot topics assuming they know what you are going to say and start flailing about.

It is. My wife usually uses it as a preface for bad news. "I know this is probably going to upset you, but..."

That phrase always foretells bad news just as surely as "you're probably not gonna believe this, but" precedes a lie.

Not here. It usually comes with unvarnished honesty.
