good move on your part!

The minimum age for many of those contests/giveaways is 18 or 21. If you were born yesterday you'd most likely be ineligible.

Not sure why you think a factory warranty would affect a product Best Buy sells...that is why it is called a "factory" warranty.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Make sure it's legit.

Do you need a W/D or other appliances? Those will help fill out your order.

SCAM ALERT!!
Yes, it looks very legit, even with active pages that allows you to enter all of your personal info wink, wink. But like any other scam, they never pay attention to details. I got one of those texts, and went to the website they tell you to go. What gave it away, was when I started to click on the small links that are usually at the bottom in the fine print, and sure enough, they were broken links, which let me to believe, they cloned that page from somewhere else. I hope the OP did give away his identity. IF he did, He is SCROOGED.

IIRC BestBuy and many other retailers offer these as prizes for completing a receipt survey. Sounds like that may be what he won.

What a coincidence. I just deleted two texts earlier today from 'Best Buy' claiming that I've won. I'll try to see if I get find the messages in my trash and post them.

ETA: Found them:

+1224xxx0815: ATTN: Rewards Zone Member, you have WON! Go to bestbuy.rwdzn.com/?m5 and enter code xxxx to claim your $1000 Best Buy Gift Card! 2:50 PM

+1404xxx9607: Your entry has won! Go to bestbuy.rwdzne.com/?5 and enter the code "xxxx" to claim your $1000 Best Buy gift card! Must claim by 11/30/2012. 9:49 AM

Assuming it's legit, here are some thoughts:

Almost EVERYTHING BB sells is a product whose obsolescence is planned. Computers, Ipods, Ipads, video games, blah blah, they will all be much less exciting in three years.

I would take some of the cash and have some fun. Buy some nice stuff for yourself. Personally, I'm in a digital business, so I'd buy the latest, greatest PC and max out the RAM, video card, and SSHD. Then I'd get external drives and develop a good back-up system.

But, barring that, the smart thing to do is buy popular products and resell them right now, during the holiday season. I'd go for iPads.

The other smart thing to do is buy appliances that you will use in the future. Already got a dishwasher? Expect it to last ten years? When it dies, wouldn't it be nice to have another sitting in the basement?

I'd throw it right on ebay. People get so into bidding they go above the card value.

You would buy $3500 worth of stuff you want and the rest into Ipads to sell.

The tax burden for a prize of that size should be about $1000 to 1500, depending on your income level.

I'd start by not buying the most overpriced product in the store.

Get a nice 60" LED TV and some home appliances you need.

In short no, because he hasn't received any income if it is a scam. Glenshaw Glass requires three elements to qualify as income. (1) Undeniable accession to wealth; (2) complete dominion and control; (3) clearly realized. None of these elements are present when there is no prize/money recieved. Even if it is not a scam he will not have to pay income taxes if he disclaims the prize within a resonable period of time. Otherwise if it is not a scam and he accepts it, then yes he will have a tax burden.

This is not legal advice.

This is brilliant. But he doesn't have to limit himself with just the girls at best buy. He could find any two girls and offer them xxxx for the deal and still have $ left over.

Anyway I'm pretty sure this is all a scam so it's irrelevant.
