In that price range Kershaw has a few solid good looking knives.

A Buck 110 is not a "pocket" knife. It's a large 4" blade knife that needs a belt holster to carry it.

I'd stay away from the tactical type knives just because guys are so picky about EDC knives. Yes, the Kershaw Leak is a great knife by most acounts, but I personally don't like that style. If someone gave me one as a gift, I'd probably just throw it in a tackle box and hardly ever use it.

The Case knives on the other hand are classic "pocket" knives and great gifts. Guys will use and carry them often and I've never seen anyone who didn't like one as a gift. It's also the kind on knife that you can use in front of someone that won't freak them out like a big black tactical knife tends to do.

Ok, a Buck Ranger, a smaller version of the 110. They are the classic American knives.

Depends on the style knife you think the person would prefer. A Case canoe for a nice traditional style, or, A Kershaw Zing, or Groove (depending on size) for a modern manual-flipper.

Pocketknife.
When I hear 'pocketknife', I immediately think about my constant companion.

Case Medium Stockman!!!!

I've carried one like this, for over 30+ years.

I have become a little particular about my knives.

Case only if it is NOT made in the USA. This is classic. This is the country boy knife.

Kershaw Leek Knife with Sandvik 1660CB Stainless-Steel/CPM-D2 Composite two-tone Stainless-Steel Blade. This is a dress knife and fits well in a suit pocket. D2 means that I am not always sharpening it. The two tone blade also looks really cool.

Spyderco Manix 2 Lightweight, BD-1,Translucent Blue, Plain Edge, is the perfect knife to carry while wearing cargo pants hanging out, doing stuff in and outside the city. The BD-1 steel is a super steel. It stays sharp and doesn't rust the way I treat it.

I like the Kershaw OD-1 with flipper opening system. I used to have the silver blade which survived being run over in a gravel parking lot. I lost that one and bought the same model only in black to replace it. It's nice because you can mount the clip at either end so it sits higher or lower in your pocket/belt.

If you decide to get a Swiss Army knife, get the Victorinox.

If you decide to get a tool, Gerber (I really like the fisherman for when you don't know what you will get into.)

Ditto. My choice would be a Victorinox Alox model like the Pioneer or Farmer.YMMV. tom.

I have to vote for the Kershaws, since I bought them, they are pretty much what I carry. Depending on what line of work you are in, the more "dressy" folders might be more appropriate. it doesnt qualify for made in USA, but I found some nice Hen and Rooster knives on E-Bay that would work for the more "dressy" look. Sounds like you are a great co-worker.

I suppose you could call me a 'collector'.

I've carried my Medium Stockman for so long, I feel like I'm nekkid without it.

I thought that I had lost my "EDC" knife a while back.
I really missed that knife.
Found out my son borrowed it, and left it in his room.

I took care of that!

I went out and bought him one, with "Burnt Amber" scales!!!!

Gotta be model #6318, though. I don't like the 'other' blades in the Medium Stockman lineup. (Clip blade is too tall!)

I agree. You cut with the edge, not the back. It's kinda like riding a camel when you need a horse.

As a knife user and collector I'd rather receive an American made Case knife than anything else gift wise.

You could give a Case knife to a non-knife person and they would still value the gift. It has a "non-tactical" (read traditional) quality that spans generations and could quite easily be passed down through the generations.

Not many other brands can say the same thing. I have samples of every knife listed in this thread but as a gift from one person to the next, Case or one of the classic Swiss Army knives have been the best suggestions. Just my thoughts.

My favorites:

Case Mini Trapper
Case Small Texas Jack

Buck 55

Victorinox Farmer
Victorinox Cadet
Victorinox Tinker (my absolute favorite & most carried, but not really great for a gift)

Spyderco Dragonfly

+1 for the Kershaw Leek.

It's been my EDC knife for the past 3 years. Super smooth action on the speed-safe assisted opening, very solid feel, slim and unobtrusive, razor sharp... It's a sexy little knife that will do almost anything you need it to on an average day. I'll be getting another one or 2 while I still can just so that I'll always have one...

I snagged one of these off eBay a few months ago because it was cheap... And it's been in a drawer ever since. Not a bad knife, just feels a lot less solid than my other 2 Kershaws, the Leek and the Needs Work. All 3 are speed-safe assisted, but the Brawler just feels chinsy compared to the others... Coincidence that the other 2 are US made and this one is not...?
