I like almost every single malt I've tried, but my two favorites are balvenie double wood, and old pulteney. The old pulteney is aged so close to the sea that the barrels get encrusted with salt, and it leaches into the whisky, giving it a flavor that sends me on a old time ship, with the masts creaking, sail luffing, and the scents of old rope and old wood. Love the stuff.
The really peaty scotches like laphroaig are a nice change of pace, but definitely an acquired taste.

I have mentioned it before but if you find The Edradour on a shelf or online somewhere, but it immediately. Not kidding. I stayed in Pitlochry down the road from this place, talk about an absolute perfect highland single malt.

Dalwhinnie is one of my favorites. It is a great introductory Scotch imo.
Laphroaig is an acquired taste and seems like a love or hate thing. I fell in love pretty quickly.
I heartily recommend watching the Ralfy Scotch reviews on YouTube.

Other Islays I would recommend are Ardbeg and Caol Ila. My favorite Johnnie Walker is the Green made with Talisker and Caol Ila.
This all keeps me in the $50 US range.

I have to get used to Laphroaig all over again every time I get a bottle (which is every few years). It knocks your senses off balance at first, with all those flavors that the Highland malts do not include. To me there is a little rubber, leather, and gasoline in there with the phenol and salt. And I love it.

As much as I adore Lagavulin, I wouldn't go this far. It all depends on what one wants out of an Islay.

there's a bottle of Laphroaig 18 that has a very honored place in my bar. i won't touch the stuff. TWO of my friends drink it. one lives in Alaska, the other in Kentucky. it's in no danger of not being there for them. i tried. i really did. just can't do the burnt moss and salt thing, when there's so much bourbon goodness to be had.

I like Lagavulin 16 quite a bit, and Laphroiag 1/4 cask.
My favorite Islay is Ardbeg Corryvreckan though. It's one of the best, complex malts I've had. Great, great stuff. If you like Islay, you need to try this one. Ardbeg Uigedhal (sp?) is great too, but I think the Corryvreckan is just a bit better.
Balvenie Double Wood is my favorite cheap scotch. It's readily available, too. Macallan Fine Oak 15, and Aberlour A'Bunadh are regulars for me as well.

No it didn't. Never has my HKP7 made me forget the Colt Python; Lag a' mhuilinn and Laphroaig are different whiskies, each with its own uniqueness.

My nephew bought a bottle of Laphroaig and after one drink decided it wasn't for him. He gave it to my brother who wouldn't even try it. My brother gave it to me and I have quickly acquired a liking to it but my wife can't stand the smell! A little over halfway through the bottle and it gets better with every pour. Definitely benefits from the splash of water. Now I need to make arrangements to go see my 1sf of property.

I attended a Burns Supper last night with friends and we had a dozen single-malts from around the regions of Scotland to choose from. Lagavulin 16 was one of the choices and everyone agreed that it was a flavor akin to iodine that had been filtered through a sweaty gym sock salvaged from a tragic fire. It's pretty strong. Personally, I prefer the Speyside single-malts. Balvenie Doublewood is my personal favorite and I brought a bottle for last night's after-party celebration to toast the finalization of my divorce!

It is very good and I am a fan of the scotches from Islay. Try it with some smoked salmon or blue cheese.
And for the novice it is pronounced:

Not at twice the price, and less smokey, it won't! Lagavulin is deliciously smooth, but, if one is really into the smoke, as I am, I'd rather have two bottles of Laphroaig 10 yr old, for the money! That's just my opinion, and yes the quarter cask is special to say the least!
Restless, if you haven't given Bowmore Legend a try, please do! It doesn't compare in smoothness to the other mentioned, but for $26/750, it's worth a try!
