Opinions wanted

I'm going to have some expendable cash next month and want a full size 9mm or .40 S&W with approx a 5" - 6" barrel for range use and to get into IDPA matches. Before anyone starts, I don't shoot Glocks well without concentrating hard, and don't want to go that route.

I'm looking at the following pistols:

S&W M&P Pro Series

EAA Witness Match

Springfield XDm 5.25 Comp series

CZ 75 SP-01

Beretta M9

I fondled an XDm 5.25 Comp (in .45acp) this evening and it fit me like a glove. XD's and CZ's have always agreed with me.

Any thoughts, suggestions, or recommendations?

Here is a comparison of a Glock 34, XD 5.25 and PPQ.

The S&W line is by far the second most popular in IDPA and with an Apex trigger kit they can be wonderful.

I was impressed by an XDM I tried, it has had a small but sizable presence at the 2012 nationals. Recommend the Podwer river route if you are serious about that gun, they do some impressive work on the XDM's.

You won't go wrong with either. The CZ is very popular but you have to lighten it up and there is a risk you might not make weight in IDPA. Silly rule, I know. Would stay away from the Beretta, a far less competitive gun.

Sorry, I have nothing to say about the Witness, I have never shot it and have heard nothing about it.

I thought that XD's weren't legal for service-pistol matches because they are technically single-action only.

CZ 85 Combat hands down. Or any of the CZ 75 family that has had an action job by CZ Customs. They are second to none at ANY price! Period! I mean that! I have owned a whole lot of pistols, and still own a bunch. I have shot countless pistols. My point being that my hands have never touched a better pistol than my CZ Customs, CZ 85 Combat. And I'm not even being partial. A CZ Shadow is the 2nd best pistol that my hands have ever touched. Read up some on them and then buy you one. Especially, if you want to compete. I own and have owned multiple Glocks, M&P's, XD's, 1911's, Sigs, HK's and the great Browning Hi power, but for competition get one of the 75 family and have it customized by CZ Customs. Then, thank the ever loving hell out of me after you do!!!

Have you looked at a Sig X5? It would be my choice.

I shoot a 5" M&P w/ an APEX FSS. Even before the FSS it was a very nice shooting handgun. Multiple classes, weekly range trips, you name it, no cleaning and it's still running strong. It's a work horse. Very comfortable as well.

I too have a 5" M&P9 with an apex trigger and it is an absolutely fantastic gun. I have over 4000 rounds through it, and currently it hasn't been cleaned in over 500. It has never had a single stoppage that was the fault of the gun (dud primer), ever. I love that gun.

Shoot a G34 but mostly out of inertia on my part (and the supply of gear I've obtained for Glocks over the years) but absolutely love the M&P Pro Series.

Just a clarification on the XDM, it's perfectly legal in IDPA, but it's an ESP gun, that's all.

The Phantom is all the rage in USPSA, and winning plenty. Great gun, but IDPA has them rules.

Just keep in mind if your going to use the CZ 75 SP-01 you have to use either the shadow or a standard 75 to get under the 39 ounce mark
