What would you do? Motorcycle Situation

Coming down a hill on a back country road at 50. Coal truck with a line of cars behind it coming up the hill. One lane on each side of the double yellow line.

Kid about 13-15 in your lane turns around looks up and starts to raise an aluminum baseball bat.

What do you do?

Swerve, duck, pray then continue on my way. There is no good result in confronting a car full of teenagers.

It was just one, he was walking alone down the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. 13-15, looked sort of creepy and definitely raised the bat, but not all the way. Like he was thinking about it but not in a batting position.

Gone all Snake Plissken on him.

I rigged my bike with an Indian-style lefty for occasions like that.

It was kinda weird because he wasn't overtly threatening, but he made my short hairs stand up and it didn't feel right.

By the time he turned to me I was too close to stop safely with all the gravel, and the apparent threat increased as I got closer. At first it appeared to be a kid on his way home from practice, but soon it became apparent this could be a danger to me.

Good answer. The next biker may not be as lucky as you were.

This is what I did. I didn't swerve at the last moment though. I was cruising in 5th so I dropped it into fourth, slowing down with engine breaking then revving the motor for effect and going straight at him ducking below the windscreen. He ran off the road and I continued on my way. I didn't really come close to hitting him, he saw my intentions and beat feet.

What the hell kind of inbred zinc baby walks down the road with a bat in February?

That's a stone cold situation there Gonzoso...one little slip and you are in for a nasty crash trying to escape this little toad's stool, or risk taking a swing for the cheap seats with the same result. Problems with these situations is you have a second or at most two to make the right decision.
Kinda like being boxed in in traffic and seeing someone on an upcoming overpass hefting a cinder block....In the old days, someone would have chased that little crud into a blackberry bramble with a baseball bat (or worse) of their own.

Good choice. Actually, probably the best one.

Just thinking that no matter what side of the helmet/no helmet controversy you're on, this would have been a really good time to have been wearing good head protection.

Glad things turned out well.

A few miles down the road I saw a trooper had him pulled over and sitting on the side of the road handcuffed. must have smelled dope on him or something. I had to laugh.
