I think a PT routine should be apart of everyone's preps. Not saying everyone should be able to run a mile in under 11 as everyone different but atleast something 3 times a week. The stress that any kind of event where your going to need your preps is going to be greatly increased in an unhealthy body. If you have people relying on you in that kind of event you owe it to them to be in shape (which is relative) and healthy.

Stronglifts 5x5 is a great program fir anyone who has access to Olympic weights or a gym, and is free for the download. I usually couple this with a brisk ruck walk with the kids in the bike trailer/stroller or a few sprints with a weighted vest.

What will a gym do for your ability to run?

What kind of "home gym" are you referring to, then?

Might be close.

Whatever tickles your fancy. The bare necessity in my opinion?

Pushup bars or some sort
A couple of plates and two dumbells, or a couple of sandbags weighted with sand if you're in a pinch
Pullup bar of some sort

Thats really all you need to get a decent workout if you're determined. Throw in a tire, rope, and a sturdy backpack (with some padding) and you can become a full-on meathead.

But, none of that is important. There are two aspects to running. Your cardiovascular endurance and your muscular endurance. Both of these can be greatly increased without actually having to run. Being fit is being fit. The 11 minute mile is simply an indicator of fitness. The underlying point of it all is your melee weapon is driven by you. If you're some lardass sitting around eating cornchips, your super duper kurki ain't gonna do much when you're coughing and wheezing and your arms feel like wet noodles trying to use it.

Nope.

It isn't a gym until it has a squat rack or a power rack.

And no, you can not become a "full-on meathead" because you have a tire, rope, and a couple sand bags. Not even close.

Upon further consideration... For "melee" use, perhaps:

I edited my post as you were replying.

Neither a squat rack nor a power rack is required. You can squat with barbells. I do whenever some roid-raging freak at my gym takes up the squat rack to look at his totally rad muscles in between sets of 4 squats.

Yes, you squat with barbells...using a squat rack or a power rack.

Um...no.

I pick up a barbell in each hand from the floor (sorry, is the correct term dumb-bell?). I stand up. I squat down. I do this 10 times, then I squat down and set the barbells back down. No rack required.

This is funny. You are trying to tell me 'how it is', but you don't even know the difference between a barbell and a dumbell. This would be like a guy who doesn't know the difference between a semi auto and a revolver telling us how to load the cylinder of our .357 magnum Glock 40. lol

But anyway, if you want to squat for real, you need a barbell, and at the very least stands to put it on...but preferably a squat rack or power rack, for safety purposes.

Holding the dumbells in your hand is a very different movement and exercise than having the barbell on your back, and is not a legitimate substitute for an actual barbell back squat.

Whatever you say, skippy. Go get you that squat rack. And while you're at it, get back on topic.

I have a squat rack in my garage. I do it for real, and I do it right.

PS: You are the one who started this off topic tangent, in case you forgot.

Okay, so being back on topic, does my advice of a home gym, my statement about an 11 minute mile, and the subject of this thread all make sense to you now?

I don't see how the "home gym" you speak of will let people know whether or not they can run an 11 minute mile.

If running is what you are concerned with, the best way to improve your ability to run...is to run.

SAID principle at work: Specific Adaptation to Imposed Demand.

In other words...you get better at something by doing it.

you've missed the part where I said running the 11 minute mile is just a good indicator of fitness. Rather than saying, "Can you bench w percent of your bodyweight for x sets of y reps with z minutes of rest in between each set?" its much easier.

The idea here is, "get into shape so you can properly wield a weapon before you worry about the weapon itself."

I'd be much more afraid of pro strongman than a marathon runner in a melee.

A compound bow and arrows. If Crazy Horse had had them, we'd be speaking Lakota.
