I'm getting redirects while on GT on my iPhone. Could be a GT thing.

Running a virus scan on a Mac is as useless as cleaning a Glock.

Not a bad idea to run one at all. I run one and several times have received word docs with virus's in them. The Mac can't get it , but if you forward the email it can be passed.

avast! Free Antivirus for Mac
I'm running a couple Macs and have never seen a BSD based virus so I don't run an antivirus but if you feel the need, Avast works on WIN about as well as any of them and they have a Mac version out so why not.

I just went Mac on the day Windows 8 came out. So far, I'm super happy. One thing about it is that I'm used to running Zone Alarm for a firewall, AVG of for anti-virus, Malware Bytes and Spybot Search & Destroy for other security on my Windows machines. I'm so used to that so I found Sophos and an AVG web link checker just for that peace of mind.

You might want to learn a bit more about *NIX. That you believe the above statement means you haven't looked into it all that well. Not Mac specific, UNIX variations. Mac is BSD underneath.

I wouldn't worry a bit about a virus, as of now there isn't one that can affect a Mac but a Mac can get malware. If you have to run something just make sure you look into it real good, don't want you to get a program that will cause more harm than good.
