One thing that comes to mind is a farm hand. Usually can get a room or old house to stay in and get paid in cash.

The dropouts sister was telling her that she visited her brother recently. Apparently after getting out of college and working for about 10 years, he said "screw this" and dropped out.

The guys lives on a small piece of land that he doesn't own in the SW, basically a squater. He has no driver's license or any type of government ID. He tore up his social security card, pays no income tax, gets no government assistance at all, has a wife and child (who is now grown). Doesn't have a phone, computer, or bank account. He trades, barters, sells crops and/or pays cash for everything. He has a degree in engineering but besides growing and selling crops he does odd jobs for case. As far as his sister knows, he doesn't abuse substances and has never been arrested. If local agencies start coming around offering assistance or help he leaves and goes somewhere else. She said he actually lives quite comfortably off the grid and off the books. Apparently he has been doing this for 25 years or so.

I wonder if (besides being a homeless bum or the Amish) could anyone actually do this? I know some fugitives get false identities and live that way but I'm not talking about living on a false identity, I am talking about living completely anonymously and below the radar. (no I am not ready to drop out yet)
Yes very possible to hide anyone or anything..Look how Romney hide his finances.

Where can a person "take a shower at work" without having entered the world of paperwork because of that work? Just asking...

That is something I did not ask them about.

What I do know from other people is that one can go for many years without filing taxes or claiming “8” before IRS remembers about you.

I had a friend who did not file for several years but with right accountant he ended up getting back cash from the government.

IRS us a gigantic, blind, mindless machine. If you know people that can manipulate it you can get away with a lot.

Not me though. I file my taxes every year with major tax services and pay what they tell me to pay but I see a lot of people getting by without doing the same.

Some construction companies and oil-well service companies I deal with have showers on-site for their people, and I'd imagine that least some of them have undocumented 'employees' there as well.

It's possible and even legal if you don't skirt any laws like driving without a license, but it ain't easy and can't be good for the kid to not know anything about the world other than what his parents know.

My neighbor from across the street fell off his riding mover on the way home. He was way too drunk and underage. County cop told him to get up and escorted him home.
Outside of city limits things work a little different.

The best part of having undocumented people is that when you kill one off, they never really existed.

There is a great Documentary on Netflix called "Erasing David." A guy in England went to great links to "erase" himself from the grid. Then gave himself a head start and hired 2 private detectives to try and find him. He resorted to living in abandon buildings and out in the woods to disappear.

It would not be worth it to give up the comforts of civilization to vanish... No Bank account, no electricity, no phone, no internet or email... it would be tough. Even the homesteaders in Alaska have fuel and electric services.

If you wanted to exist in civilization, you would probably have to adapt to a homeless lifestyle... keeping a low enough profile to not to attract any attention from law enforcement.

Google yourself sometime. It is pretty unnerving how much info you will find about yourself.

There's a book called "How to be invisible." You should look it up.

Let me tell you. It is NOT cheap to be invisible. For almost all of us, it is not worth it.

"he tore up his social security card"......tearing up your card doesn't suddenly make you disappear off the books......it simply means you now have no card. If a card had been issued, there is a file on that person.

If income is not reported to the IRS by employers, you don't exist to them, and they don't report wages/earnings to SS.

I have owned remote property in 3 of Arizonas more rural counties..........and I can affirm that there are MANY people living this way, most by choice....and most are happy.

I have known people that have had kids that "don't exist"......think about it.....
Birth at home, no SS#.
Home schooled, no enrollment records.
Don't ask for assistance, none given......and in fact many rural counties are hurting so bad, they will gladly "overlook" the 'folks' living this way as long as no one makes a stink.

Certainly have no intention of dropping out of society. I like my life as it is.

In reading the responses and doing some research, there seems to be a sub culture of people who live on the fringes of society. Homeless/transients are among them. Certainly illegal aliens are among them although some get false ID to manipulate the system. I know there are people in the south west US that live out in the desert in RVs, shacks, tents etc. Not to mention hippie communes.

The system however seems to be set up so that you are dependent on it. They make sure from cradle to grave that you participate in it. It is virtually impossible not to. Even the most remote place in the country has at the very least a county government set up to look after the people in it.

I would guess that "not existing" on paper is not realistic. Existing below the radar (not making enough money to pay taxes, or have a bank account for example) or existing at a level where the govt doesn't care you exist might be more doable (though not very desirable).
