Any Additional Advice?

I am attending Larry Vicker's 2 Day AK47 Operators Class next weekend along with 4 shooting buddies.

Most of the other guys are tricking their guns out with some optics, VFG's, etc. I plan to run the class with a WASR10. I replaced the wood furniture with polymer but the rifle is otherwise stock. I have some, but limited experience on the AK platform and my thought process is to run the gun stock and then decide what mods, if any, would be worthwhile.

Extra mags are going to be carried on a chest/belly rig that holds a total of six extras.

Any advice from those of you woth more AK expertise?

There should be a gear list given by Vickers Tactical. I would say the minimum would be AK, tactical sling (not traditional AK), magazines, ammo, and a way to keep magazines and ammo on you. Comfort items are also useful like gloves, knee pads, etc. Bring snacks and water.

Great answer, lock the thread.

OP, great attitude. No better way to find out what you do and do not need.

I'm jealous, would liked to have gone but didn't have the money. How much have you shot the WASR? Seems like familiarity with the gun and some level of ability to run it completently will fare you better than attachments. Please do an After Action report here on the class, I'd like to hear how it went.

Agreed. As long as you have good mags, I think you've got it covered!

just a sling and maybe a chest rig for your mags.. I just cant put gizmoes on a perfectly good AK variant. Let the other guys show up with Space Shuttle Door Gunner rifles...

I personally prefer to start on a platform with iron sights, then once I am proficient with them I'll put an optic on it.
As far as other weapon accessories go, that's all personal preference and I think the only way to really find out what works best for you is through trial and error.

For classes I like to use a belt, they are faster and more comfortable for me than a chest rig. Throw a few Tacos on it, a dump pouch, and a holster and you are good to go.

All you need is a good rifle, good sling, good mags, and a way to carry them. I prefer a red dot, but I would have no problem running iron sights. Focus on the skills and drills, and not on the gear.

Gloves, definitely gloves. AKs get HOT after a few magazines. The blue mechanic-type gloves from Harbor Freight will git er done.

You got some good advice. Gloves are the most important I think. Hot rifle and it has sharp edges on it. Extra mags would be also be a good idea. Remember the AK isn't an AR so don't try and shoot it like one. Follow the doctrine they teach.

It's probably not as critical for AK's as it is for AR's, but keep the action wet (lubed).
