Hello , My question is ? Can I use +P ammo in this older K frame in "MINT CONDITION" I'ts a 15-2..

Can you?, yes. Should you?, probably not. Modern S&W revolvers are specifically marked as being rated for +p ammo as to my knowledge current production .38's are heat treated the same as the .357's. In the past they were treated to different specs I believe. Many people shoot +p ammo out of older revolvers without issue, but in my opinion why take the risk? The .38 special has being doing the job for 120 years and the majority of the time was not using high pressure ammo, I shoot standard .38 hollowpoints from Hornandy out of mine with no worries.

Just ruined a beautiful 15-4 Smith w/six inch barrel. Reloaded some +P loads with 158gr. bullets. Over a period of a few months and couple hundred rounds, the cylinder started to drag! close inspection revieled a swelled chamber! So now I have one beautiful Smith and has to go back to the factory. All in the name of tighter groups. Each .2 grain increase over standard load was getting better and smaller groups. live and learn!

I would shoot a few +P to see were they hit for carry rounds and practice with the standard stuff.

A numbered model K frame won't be hurt by +P ammo within SAAMI specs. An overpressure book load can hurt any gun.
K frames were being used with .38 ammo nearly twice the pressure of what we're calling +P .38sp today. You'll always accelerate wear by running higher pressure ammo, but +P shouldn't threaten a numbered model K frame like a 15-2.

Congrats on the gun, I have a 4" 15-2, thousands of rounds through it, including a whole bunch of Magtech and Rem 125gr +P SJHP, Win +P+ 147gr jhp and Speer Lawman +P 158gr TMJ. Still tight, still crazy accurate, great revolver.

You should have used .357 Magnum brass!!!


Plus a 9 mm taper crimp die, of course − or .38 Super, but only in a [*AHEM*] 'pinch'...
