Done with 10mm Auto -- getting rid of it all!
I'm getting rid of eveything I own related to 10mm Auto -- G20SF, G29SF, all DoubleTap, Buffalo Bore, Underwood, Norma, and other ammunition, all conversion barrels -- everything...
I'm done with 10mm Auto! Finished... Because of this:

Not me. If I need more than the 10 can offer, then I need a 44 mag at it's full power. Why bother with all the overlap in power factors?
And for me, the 10mm has enough practical power for an auto pistol cartridge. But that's my take. Opinions vary.

For 10mm power -- I'll shoot 45 Super...
As for barrels, I've got a KKM 40 S&W conversion, KKM 357 Sig conversion, and Lone Wolf 9x25 Dillon conversion for the G29SF. A KKM 6" hunting 10mm barrel and a Lone Wolf 6" 9x25 Dillon barrel for the G20SF.
The lot is going with me to the Tulsa Gun Show on 11/10-11 for liquidation.

If it was not for needing to use the comp I would probably switch also. But being I hunt with mine the extra noise from the comp is not worth it. Don't want to hurt my ears.

How can you compare 460 Rowland to 10mm?
Good Lord... Guess you don't carry a gun... Because carrying a big gun with a massive compensator on the end is ridiculous both in appearance and practice.
And 45 super is generally not powered as high as 10mm from what I can tell.
Oh and before I forget:

Sorry to hear that you are leaving the ten millimeter community.
This thread just reminds me of how versatile the ten millimeter is. At one end of the spectrum we are poo pooing it because it isn't a .460 Rowland, and at the other end of the spectrum, there's people like me marvelling at how dang accurate the cartridge can be. ......

AND... Let's keep in mind most of us own our G20s or 29s for SD and CCW. For social work against common bad guys the 10mm will get the job done. I think there's a point of diminishing returns as we keep trying to get hotter/ bigger rounds on bad guys. I'm no fan of the .380 or 9mm for carry, but I'll only carry what I can reliably put rounds on BGs with. It'd be like carrying a Smith 500 for SD. NOt too practical for followup shots or concealability.

Shooting 45 Super out of an XDS does that for me... Similar ballistics to full power 10mm Auto - but with a bigger/heavier bullet... from a smaller /lighter package than the G29.

The .460 Rowland is good but lacks the sectional density of the 10mm. It also lacks the multiple platforms that a 10mm can be bought in - stock. In addtioin, a conversion kit is required for the .460 ($$) and there is NO factory ammo for it ... ANYWHERE. In addition, there are no conversion barrels and takes a non-standard bullet-size (doesn't it?).
For hunting, I run 200gr XTP @ 1300fps and 200gr WFNGC's at 1350fps for any medium game I run into. (For a little variety or for larger beasts, I have a Ruger SBH .44 mag that pushes 240gr bullets at 1600fps or 310gr bullets at 1300)
The .460 is cool but I'll take a non-wildcat cartridge any day over it.
Have fun with that pistol.... it looks like a shooter!!

Incorrect - Buffalo Bore, Underwood Ammunition, and even Georgia Arms offer factory ammunition in 460 Rowland.
The bullet is the same as 45 ACP (.451) and you can use regular 45 ACP dies to reload with. Once a pistol (1911, XD, or Glock) has been converted to 460 Rowland, you can shoot 45 Super, 45 ACP +P, and 45 ACP through the pistol without changing the barrel (no conversion barrel needed - unless you wanted to get one for 400 Corbon... Dont know why you would want that) springs, or mags -- the extractor is strong enough to keep the cartridge at the proper headspace.
My XD Compact Tactical was $500 NIB & the conversion kit (no gun smithing required) was $299 - so I have $799 in a pistol the size of a G20/21, a 10 or 13+1 capacity - but with the power of a 44 Magnum, 10mm Auto, or 45 ACP depending upon the cartridge used.
Quite versatile if you ask me!

Good to know....

What then is a .460 Rowland? It is simply a .45 ACP case that has been stretched and strengthened. Starline is making the brass, head stamped ".460 ROWLAND", that is 1/16 of an inch longer than the standard .45 ACP (standard .45 ACP reloading dies work) with a beefed up interior. It will not chamber in guns designed to handle the .45 ACP and .45 ACP's will not properly chamber in semi-autos designed to take the .460 Rowland as they cannot headspace on the case mouth but will drop too far into the chamber. http://www.sixguns.com/tests/tt460r.htm
|
Not sure if you have the mechtech conversion, but this is what they say about shooting .45ACP in their .45 Rowland 'conversion'.
Quote:
Can I shoot .45 ACP ammo in my .460 Rowland CCU?
Yes you can but there are some things to observe. The 460 case is 0.060" longer than a 45ACP and because of this the 45 round actually 'headspaces' on the extractor claw which leaves space between the 45 case mouth and the headspace ledge against which the 460 case rests. Firing 45ACP rounds will cause a buildup of crud between the 45 case mouth and the headspace ledge. This must be carefully cleaned out before attempting to fire 460 rounds or there will be chambering problems with the 460 round.

I have the conversion sold by www.460Rowland.com - basically, from Johnny Rowland the cartridge designer.
Yes, cleaning the barrel after shooting 45 Super or 45 ACP is a good practice.

A .460 makes sense if you aren't already running 10mm reloading gear and guns. If you are, I don't see that big of a difference.
My everyday 10mm handloads are 230s @ 1130. Running a .460 can add 200fps to that at the expense of sectional density, i.e. .45 230g and .40 180g have the same sectional density, (incidentally, they are about the same speed...). If you wouldn't shoot it w/ a 180g .40 cal, you shouldn't shoot it w/ a 230g .460. I would be interested if it could push 280+ bullets over 1100... but I haven't seen that happen yet.
As far as .44 Mag power, uh-uh... .460 pushes a 230g bullet as fast as a .44 Mag pushes a 300g bullet. No comparison at all. It is actually closest to warmed up .44 Special or .45 Colt loads, which isn't bad at all, but in no way .44 Mag.

I'm running 230's at 1350+ from a 5" barrel - producing 930 ftlbs of energy. Compared to off the shelf 240's in 44 magnum from a 4" revolver at about the same speed - they are very similar in energy.
Can you load 44 Magnum hotter and push the bullets faster or heavier through an 8 3/8" revolver or an 18" carbine? Sure.
However, the goal with the 460 Rowland is to get mid-range 44 Magnum power from a comfortable to carry auto loader with a greater magazine capacity.
13+1 of my 1350+ 230's compared to 6 240's from a 44 revolver at a similar speed... Yeah, I'll take the 460 Rowland. Especially with an extra 13-rd magazine (or two) at the ready.
The numbers show that the 460 Rowland produces more energy than "full power" 10mm Auto from a similar sized pistol - which is what I am replacing...
It's not for everyone - but I'm satisfied with my decision.

The Rowland looks like an interesting cartridge. I am curious how your XD holds up in the long term with the added power.
I like the 1911 platform but there have been some reliability issues at 10mm power levels, raising this would seem to be pushing an already questionable situration.
Keep us posted.

Cool pistol, no doubt ... and I'm guilty of loving my powerful autoloaders. And I'll never talk down on the .460 - hell, I almost converted my old Kimber to one.
Enjoy that pistol. Some gel tests would be nice!

I honestly don't see any problem with 10mm 1911's OR these compensated conversions. If try are built nice and tight they will last at LEAST tens of thousands of rounds.

I'm sorry. Did you say "comfortable to carry"? Excuse me are talking about a g21 with a 1-2 inch compensator?
