Spent my evening debating critical criminology with my five year old, and she won. In other news, I'm making pulled pork in the crock pot for dinner tomorrow!

I got married so I wouldn't have to pull my own pork anymore.

If you been married long enough, you know you end up pulling your own pork anyway and then you get tired of it and just sleep on the couch watch Skin-a-Max on cable.

Well, it's back to day shift for the next 4 months...class A's, ties, brass out and about, heavy traffic, crashes every time it rains/snows and getting up at 0500.
I like the more normal hours and days off, but that's about it.

public opinion poll on today: continuing with a prescription army or a professional one.
Looks like we continue with the precription one, its like 60:40 at the moment and the booths close in an our.
Not really sure what would be better on a long term, but I voted for the professional one.

Well, if they do their mandatory service and then stay for a long time, wouldn't that make them professionals at that point?

But most dont stay. During my time only four or five out of 100 stayed for a year or maybe little bit more after we where finished with our service. Most dont become full time professional soldiers ("professional".. lol) at all, only prolonging their time or going to a mission in the Kosovo or Golan.
My sniper buddy stayed for another year, went to the Kosovo and then back to where he was from - other end of Austria. Last year I found out that he is also a police officer now. Funny.

Should have been afterwards, but it seems like there wont be a change at all now. Too bad, would have loved to see a professional army.
Our army gets nearly now funding at all, I thing its 0.3 percent of the BIP.
Old equipment, old barracks but hundrets of high ranking soldiers now one needs - thats so stupid.
A newspaper showed that we have more soldiers working as cooks than army engineers...

So the hospitals, schools, and old folks homes still are going to get their service personnel?

I am surprised you know that. All these offcourse now get very cheap personell. Its like modern slavery somehow.
Since nothing changes - nothing changes, but I would prefer having really motivated people working as soldiers or driving in the ambulance, than modern goverment slaves..

When I got to be part of a "professional military", I got to visit. It was the best practical education I could have ever gotten.
Every young person should take time off from university and travel to other nations unlike their own.

So Austrians don't have a standing volunteer military, basically... unlike Israel where people do their mandatory service and stay.
That is a strange cultural phenomenon that such a low percentage stay, but maybe the fact that they aren't really given the resources nor challenging jobs has a lot to do with it.

I even learned about the 'Schlacht am Kahlenberg'. If it wasn't for angry Austrians, Germans, and Poles at Vienna in the 17th century, we'd all be on prayer rugs pointing towards the Arab desert.

I thank the Pretzel makers who were up before dawn who heard the Turks tunneling underneath the castle and alerted the soldiers.
Schadenfraude. Good stuff.
