Need assistance with 165g load
I have a friend who wants a paper punching load. He's using berrys mfg 165g bullets & Unique powder. The Lyman Manual starts at 5.4g & max out at 6g. How does 5.8g sounds?

Most people include the caliber involved with such questions.
Can I guess .40 S&W?

What do you think Lyman meant when they posted 5.4 as a "start" load?

No, Lyman does NOT tell you that, they do not use plated bullets in theire data. Yes, it matters. Plated are not lead & are not jacketed but really land inbetween. So you should be using starting jacketed data or lead data if available.

No you were clear, you said Berry's. Berry;s are NOT FMJ but plated. That was my point. Bullets are not plug & play & a plated bulelt is NOT a jacketed bullet. So use the starting jacketed data & work up or use the lead bullet data & you'll be very close. In other words, jacketed data with plated bullets will have higher pressures.

We only have the Lyman 49th Ed & Hornady 8th Edition to go by. Its his first time loading that (.40S&W) caliber.

That is my point, you have books that do NOT have data for the bullet you are using. Again, a plated bullet is NOT jacketed. So you have to load it diff, than jacketed. You will be fine w/ starting jacketed data & working up, just don't approach max jackted data. If you want upper end loads, & you shouldn't as a noob, you would look at the max lead data as your limit w/ a plated bullet.

It really doesn't matter how many manuals you buy, you still won't find much in the way of published data for plated bullets. It just doesn't exist. Go to the manufacturer's web site and read their reloading recommendations. Follow them...
Plated bullets don't save much money when compared to FMJ from Precision Delta. If you bought the Berry's in low quantity, it's almost a given that they cost more than PV. The downside to PV is that you can't buy just 100. If that's a problem, try to split the order over several reloaders.
Given that plated bullets are somewhat 'fragile' when it comes to the crimp damaging the plating and the complete lack of published load data, I have decided to just use FMJ.

I load the 165 grn plated bullet for the 40 S&W. I use H Universal, 5.2 grains. It's a bit on the mild side, but cycles fine. It's a load unlikely to cause any problems. I don't have my COL right here.
