I am thinking about doing a paint job on one of my rifles and I thought I would get some advice from the crew here on a good brand of paint to get.

I don't need anything fancy just a simply spray on paint that won't chip off easily. What do you guys use?

Do you want to bake or not..

I like brownells Molycoat.. It requires field stripping and a quick bake while your spouse is out...cause it stinks.. It will eventually chip and scrath but its pretty durable..


Durakote and Dura Bake have also worked well for me on carry 1911s but go on a little thick..

I like the Brownells Moly because it goes on very light on fresh clean anodizing and Phosphate it sticks very well.


let me add with good prep and a degrease it sticks well

I de grease heat it up to about 160 degrees and degrease again, then warm it up till dry and paint while warm ...then bake..

I did Krylon camo on some furniture for a coyote rifle. I did primer, paint and clear coat.

Just sprayed an upper and lower with this it is promising but I have not used it yet or fully assembled it.. I hear good things though.

I've used Alumahyde II on several rifles and like it a lot so far.

Thanks for the input guys. I would really prefer just a spray on finish that does not require heating.

Also, what is the best way to prep the rifle prior to painting?

This is what I have done , field strip and degrease with a brake cleaner.

Then I follow with a rub down with alcohol/
Let part sit in sun or warm with heat gun or hair dryer , cause oil will seep out, degrease again with alcohol..

Then warm slightly and spray lots of light coats...New uppers and lowers take paint, even krylon very well. so do parked barrels and other metal parts;
