your fav 22LR ammo
I have a couple of 1970ish marlin 22's and have not bought ammo for them in probably 25years. Back then I would just get a stick of 100 from kmart. I don't remember the brand but I do remember a handful of duds per stick.
What brand of 22LR is considered most popular nowadays.
Which ones are junk

My first choice right now is whatever I can find on the shelves, unfortunately.

In a perfect world with everything on the shelves, what 22LR ammo would you select.

CCI Sub Sonic and CCI Standard are both very accurate in all my 22's.
Mini mags are good, but not quite are accurate.

When it is available, I like CCI Mini-Mags and Federal Semi-Auto Match. The FSAM is very accurate and as well clean burning leaving very little residue. I have fired 350 rounds of the FSAM in a single range session in a nice little S&W 18-3. At the end of the range session, the revolver was still not difficult to load due to fouling. In fact, when it came time to clean the revolver, other than brushing out the cylinder and wiping down the exterior metal surfaces, there was not anything else to do. The face of the cylinder was virtually clean as well as the little space between the barrel rear of the barrel and the top strap of the frame.

I have always had luck with Federal 36 grain copper plated hollow point. Very reliant. I could say that out of a 550 round box, the most duds I have gotten, is 4. I usually have no problem finding them at walmart or academy sports. Then again, is being a while since i bought some. The last time I bouth some, was three years ago when wally had them on sale for 4.99 a box of 550rds. I bought 20 boxes, so I still have plenty.

My .22's reliably cycle the blue box Federal 40gr lead point stuff. Seems like great plinking ammo. And it was plentiful before Sandy Hook, but not so much anymore.
Honestly, every gun is different and many .22's are very particular on what they do and don't like to eat. Your best bet is always to try various types and keep track of what you do and don't like for your gun(s).

Favorite is Winchester Super X, followed by Federal. The SX being a 36 grain high vel rounds, and the Federal being a standard 40 grain high vel round.

Since I dont think match ammo is worth the $$(do I think its worth a bit more than "regular ammo YES...do I think most of its THAT much better than say CCI standard velocity NO) I skip it and go
CCI
Winchester
Federal
Bottom of list and I dont mess with unless its the ONLY thing left
Remington.
though that said in certain guns(in some its great and in others I just cant get a decent group to save my life...seems like the newer the gun for me the better it works it wont shoot for crap in any of my hand me down .22's) Remington yellow Jackets are ok AND ive had good luck with Remington Sub Sonic ammo for accuracy.

In this order
Eley
CCI mini mag
CCI Blazer
Federal
All have different applications so in one respect each is my favorite.

I'll second that for the best bulk pack ammo.
The best premium .22lr ammo in my opinion are the CCI Velocitor, Stinger, and MiniMag --- hands down.

CCI mini-mags or Stingers;
For plinking, I have always liked the Federal bulk pack stuff.

I've never really shot any match grade ammo, so I got no opinion there. Otherwise, the CCI Mini-mags are what I like best. So far the guns I have shoot them very well. My preference when it comes to bulk ammo is the Federal blue box stuff.
