WWII german pistol

I've got a 9mm Luger pistol that my grandfather brought home from the war. To my knowledge it's nothing super special. I've never done any checking around or research. To the best of my knowledge it's a basic side arm .
The gun is pricless to me but i'm wondering if it's ok in my safe at home and wondering about insurance (how much if any at all)?

Check the pistol to see if the serial number is stamped on all of the parts, and that the numbers match. If the numbers match, and the pistol will work, and the finish is still in good condition, it may be worth quite a bit of money.

If you do have a prime Luger, have an appraiser come to your home and do an appraisal for you. It may well be worth insuring it. Many Homeowners policies have provisions for insuring firearms, and they will need that appraisal to set the premium amount.

Good Luck.

Curious. Does it say P-38 on the side ?
While there was plenty of Luger's in the field the P-38
was the standard side arm. If it is a Luger, it might say P-08 on it. And that would be sweet if you had one.

If you haven't done the research, you don't know that it is not something super special. There are a lot of Luger variants. A bare bones P08 if matching and in decent condition, not prettied up with bumper chrome, is worth a good bit of money. A rare version is worth a lot of money.

You need to show us close clear pictures of the pistol and its markings. We can get you on the right track. If it looks like something super special, we can direct you to the experts.

I'll confess now the gun isn't in my posestion. It's still back home with my dad. I didn't want to risk losing it when I moved away. I do know the numbers don't match. I knew that would be a hurt on the value. There is a P08 on it. I have fired it but that was over 10 years ago.I'm inclined to believe though, that non numbers matching guns would be common for a war time weapon. My thinking is whenyou NEED a side arm you won't care if your barrel and reciever and whatever else match. Just a thought.P.S. my cousin got the 8mm mauser rifle from grandpa when he passed. I always thought it was so cool having the german rifle/pistol combo. (not that they were german just that they were war time.)

Can't tell anything without pictures . A shooter class PO8 can go anywhere from 400-800 bucks 400-500 being most common. Some less if it is a real beater . Check to see if the magazine is original they are valuble as well if they are period .

Without pics or even knowing what model it is, it's impossible to give a value.

If it looks like this, it is a Luger.

What are the markings on top, side and bottom of barrel?
What color are the grips?
Is the toggle flat or scollaped?
