Oh Lord, where to start? She did what she was told and, evidently to some degree trained, to do. Under the circumstances I suppose that must have taken some courage, yes.
Here's a real likely scenario: Mom tells the kid to get a gun and hide in the closet. Then Mom goes to open the closet door without saying anything first. YEAH, RIGHT!
Whether the man was armed or not, no one is going to fault a 12 year old girl for shooting an adult male intruder who is in the process of finding her hiding place. Especially if Mom told her to do just that.
Finally, it is the intruder who is lucky she didn't kill him. Her conscience would be clear in any event.
