What have you done this week - 4th quarter 2012

Since the other "this week" thread is dead, how about a new one to finish out the year. (And how about we make a real, conscious effort to keep childish needling to a minimum.)

For me, the last week has seen a minor breakthru in workout, and some business 'preps' (pursuing certain contracts more aggressively, gathering resumes and applications for additional help, etc).

Also made a knife purchase that might actually end my fixed-blade knife purchases for a good while to come. For years I've wished & searched for a spare marbles ideal identical to my primary one, but they're discontinued and no joy. (It's a limited-run version with an 8', 1/4" thick, 0170-6 carbon steel blade and epoxy-impregnated maple burl handle, that was made only for AG Russell, probably 8 or 10 years ago.) Something about the grip shape & size and the balance of it, makes it just fit me about perfect, and it's been "my" knife since the day I discovered it. When I bought it, it was the last one Russell had in stock, and since it was a Russell-only production run, that meant it was indeed "the last one" available new anywhere. A couple years ago I found one that was close, but not an exact match. It was from the same Russell-only series, but with a different blade and the balance just isn't the same. I've since tried other knives mainly as experiments; trying to find something I'd like as well as the old ideal. Found and bought some good ones, some ok ones, and even some VERY good ones, but none of them were that Goldilocks "just right" for me. Then this week I came across a NIB marbles ideal online that is the exact model as my old primary one, and snatched it.

I'm sure that someday something will just "call" to me & I'll give in - I've been semi-jonesing for a Fallkniven NL2 ever since picking up their SK6 a while back - but with this one purchase of an identical spare Ideal, I have to admit that I've objectively filled that need, likely for life.

Good luck on that wishful thinking!

Reminds me of this infamous scene!

I have thought similar from time to time...

..then I have yet another Al Pacino moment!

Speaking of the above...

Made more progress on Project #1..

Got in an order of subsonic ammo in for it (3 types) for T&E.

Made a decision on the picatinny rail mounted mini-camcorder..

.. & a Drift Innovation HD170 Stealth Action Camera is headed this way!

Also an HD170 Picatinny Mount..

..3 each Drift HD170 High Capacity 1,700 ma/h Batteries

..& a couple 32GB Micro SDHC Class 10 memory cards

Quote:
Highest quality professional HD video in 720p or 1080p with 170 degree wide-angle lens

Integrated LCD screen so you can line up the perfect shot, preview footage and share with friends

RF remote turns camera on and off while on your helmet or outside your vehicle. Saves batteries, memory and edit time

Night mode for optimal low-light performance. Digital 4X zoom

Ability to shoot in 60 frames per second for buttery smooth, professional quality slow motion video.

The "night mode" will be great for documenting night training...

..especially with IR Laser/IR Illuminator running.

It is rugged, waterproof & submersible...

..& has a sacrificial lens.

The lens can rotate to be aligned with barrel axis..

..and the lens can be changed out with different aspect ration lens

4x Digital Zoom.

Lots of mounting options...including Helmet & Picatinny Rail.

Action videos taken with the Drift HD170

Survival/Preparedness Forum

Made some progress on Project #2 also..

Preloaded 1K rds of 300 BLK 220 gr OTM Remington Subsonic on stripper clips..

..then tonight into nylon bandoleers..

.. & 6 bandoleers of 150 ea. (900 total) of the total into a .50 can

FWIW..

I feel "Interesting Times" are ahead..

..especially when the POTUS makes remarks like this one to the UN..

Quote:
“The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam.”

Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2012/...#ixzz27eBaqirY

Could you just imagine the mass media uproar if George Bush had stood before the UN and stated..

Quote:
“The future must not belong to those who slander Jesus Christ, the son of God!”
But from the liberal left mass media....where is the response or mention of Obama's remark??

Our ambassador to Libya was recently murdered..

(and much, much worse if some reports are true )

..along with other State Dept employees/contractors..

..embassies & consulates attacked..

..but the response from the highest levels of our government seems to be one of contrition & apology..

..not one of righteous anger & retribution!

IMO ...higher levels of our federal government apologizing for a free society & showing weakness is simply an invitation for future attacks!

Times like this make me really miss Ronald Reagan!

Bought 2000 rnds winchester .22 ammo along with 6 boxes of winchester .308. Trying to buy 2000 rnds of .22 every time I go to -almart. Pretty good deal 1000 rnds for 45 bucks. Got to try out my Cold Steel SRK for the first time, did some weed wacking and general stuff just to get a feel for the blade.

Similar here; donated a substantial amount of old items to a local charity last friday. Double-win imo. Helps somone who can use it, and reduces clutter in my world at the same time.

Today yet another interesting prep was at my doorstep..

..an 85 watt (8,500? lumen) HID flashlight from Greg McGee Engineering!

http://shop.gregmcgeeengineering.com...hlight-046.htm

I have used his 5,000 lumen model sold to a friend..

..insanely bright...

..like having a hand portable WWII aircraft searchlight!

The 8,500 lumen model should crank it up a notch!

McGee Engineering

Thank G-D he was out of the 8500 lumen unit. I have 3 or 4 of his lesser powered units and they are already the cat's meow.

The following comments are for those of us who aren't experienced in flashlights. They are just tools. You may want a very low powered light on a key chain. For a number of years, a 35 lumen Surefire and then a 60 lumen Surefire were the best/brightest on the market. I thought that anything brighter was unnecessary. I thought this even after I went through the Surefire Institute training. Unfortunately, as I aged I came to understand that I needed much higher powered units to use at night to look in the car trunk, in the garage, etc. So, now I have 1000 lumen units in the cars and near the front door. 8500 lumens - $305! And out of stock too! Mamma Mia! That's a lot of groceries.

I added a car charger for my phone (and most other Androids) to my wife's DD - a 2012 Ford Escape 4x4. It has less ground clearance than my 2000 Jeep Cherokee w/ 3" of lift and 31s and no raised intake but it gets twice the mileage, has more room, is more comfortable and is still new. On the other hand, my XJ is equipped for most anything where the Escape has some paper towels in the back. Range and reliability are pretty significant trump cards though.

Well, I did say "maybe" and "for a while"...

As for 'this week', I finished tweeking a new carry rig; a shoulder holster setup using survivalsheath holster bodies and a galco jackass harness. Third similar setup like this I've put together using the same components (except using holsters for different guns), and it works extremely well for me personally. Also modified a PJ pocket holster for a CM9 to make it easier to use & draw from.

Picked up another couple hundred pounds of misc staples at sams club this weekend. Mostly beans, popcorn & pasta. The sam's nearest us (still over an hour away) doesn't carry white rice in bags larger than 10lbs anymore; used to be 25's and 50's. They had basmati in 25's, but white is now only in 10's. Not sure if that's a common thing for sams now or just a local fluke.

I and DW took out the truck camper to dry camp. We found a few minor flaws to fix. One was repacking/reorganizing the vehicle for better use. The camper hasn't paid for itself yet but I already want to upgrade. I am taking measurements for the next set up. I don't like what I see available in the commercial market, I may be rebuilding my own, stripping the components from the camper.

Bucketed 150# of wheat. Shelved another 48 cans of soup. (this a double prong thing.. she was pointing out that when left on my own.. all the soups are really just variations on "beef with some veggies"), so these were all chicken and stuff type soups. Some minestrone etc.. Only partially a "prep" per se, but finished running a new circuit in the basement that brought lights to the two pantry areas. Got some wood split and stacked.. but it's every other day rain here, makes it hard to do. Did get video of her "splitting wood" yesterday..lol Traded some .223 brass for 7.62..

Local fluke. I had noticed the same thing before I left Fayetteville. I was in the Prescott AZ Sams a few days ago, and they have 50 lb bags of everything as well as 6 gallon buckets of hard wheat, and for lower prices than in Fayetteville. Stood next to a gentleman that was open carrying a full sized auto while checking out the wheat, an thought "I am home!"
