M9 trigger variability

Picked up an M9 the other year; love the ergonomics, and it's generally been reliable.
The trigger would like to drive me crazy, tho'. Sometimes it breaks clean and light, like a good single action trigger; sometimes it's so light it absolutely catches me unawares.
Other times, it seems quite heavy and picks up a lot of creep before it breaks.
Does this sound like a common problem and is there a fix?
The gun has less than 500 rounds thru' it.
