I was just offering up an opinion and an option. In no way was I telling the guy what he should do. In my home my daughter and now my granddaught always knew early on that mom and dads room was a no play zone and not to be entered unless mom or dad was in there. Always worked for us. As my daughter got older we showed her the same respect.
I think your approach is fine for your own family. It is when taking in some non-family woman, her kid, and her potential troubles that it becomes harder to control the situation.

Also, a gun can be kept on your belt when not in the safe.

Your door lock is still a good suggestion. I'd just add a safe to the mix, too

i thought you lacked good judgement on trying to teach gun safety to a three year old.

but that is not near as poor judgement on buying realestate with another party...

and just for the sake of knowing are you and your wife in some kind of "relaitionship" with this chick????

The kid is 3! 3!
You should not have to ask what you have to do if you are a responsible gun owner.

Now what do you think about guns?
That is a friggin funny story. Thanks for sharing.

Just looking for some alternatives to locking them away period. Thanks for being a smug prick. This guy probably likes the smell of his own farts.

Yeah, we are all friends. I just have a best friend of my own. The odd ball thing is I'm buying the farm and allowing them to my wife's friend to work it for room and board. As soon as I can pay her I will. As soon as she wants to leave she can.

You can never start teaching to young. There are lessons to be taught that don't require sight of a gun.

There are quite a few curmudgeons on this site. It's not poor judgment to try to educate yourself in something you have no experience in, thanks.

In my opinion, your approach is less than responsible. It appears you are not ready to handle the responsibility of a todler and firearm in the same living quarters. Both you an the mother of the three year old should seriously reevaluate your situation. Sounds like an accident waiting to happen.

You can secure your HD guns and have them just as accessible as you describe and faster in many cases. Your shotgun is probably not going to be available to you if you need it in a hurry the way you currently store it. Look for a good quality handgun safe and stay away from the cheap electronic ones and secure it next to your bed.

Ive got a 2 1/2 year old little boy. I used to keep every gun I own loaded but now I just keep my 686 loaded in the bedroom closet and my carry 1911 is put in a cabinet in the kitchen that is high enough there is no way he can climb to it.

Not sure if serious. Is it a locked closet?

Kids learn to climb quickly, almost as if a natural talent.

This guy right here.....

And it was dad's Smith 469 off duty gun. Didn't actually know it was there. Was going for the bag of mini Snickers. But when I saw it, you know what I did with it? Nothing. I was 4 or 5 at the time.

But to his credit. When he saw me up there he immediately got the gun and made it safe and allowed me to handle it and explained everything. Boom. Mystery gone and everyone's comfort level increased.

Never did get the Snickers. Damn it...

Edit to tell the end of the story about the Snickers.
