First Time Out With The Colt, Miss My AK.
My son and I took my new Colt LE6920 MOE FDE out today. We fired at targets in the sub 100 yard range at the chert pit. WE had last been here with my Arsenal SLR AK47.
While the recoil isn't as bad(the AK was mild, too), both my son and I were more accurate with the Arsenal, and we both remarked to each other, how much more fun the AK seemed.
I'm a little disappointed. This is the nicest gun I have owned, equipped with an Aimpoint PRO, and pretty awesome looking.
I'm not sure that I don't actually prefer the AK over the Colt.

Not me, I dont own a Colt(I just dont have $1000 to spend..hell i dont even have $500 to spend) I dont have that kind of $$ for a gun..but From military and work I know i like the AR/M4 platform more and im more accurate with it..I DO own a AK though....why..Because I can actually AFFORD a AK(or at least could at the time I got it for $400 $369 shipped with 3 mags actually)
But if they were BOTH the same price id pick the M4 hands down..but to be affordable to me they would have to be $500 or less.
AR just "fits" me better, plus being more modular its easier to change things to what you like I dont go for a ton of tacticool stuff just a light holder and a red dot type of mount is all i need. plus I can say one thing for SURE..i cant stand the stock/standard sights on a AK they are just horrid...again I own one and it IS fun..but id trade it for a equivalent AR/M4 any day

I am in the AR camp as well, just like the overall feel better than the AK I owned. Both are good choices IMO.

After I shoot my ARs I prefer ARs. After I shoot my AKs I prefer AKs. I pretty much like whatever gun I'm shooting as long as it's reliable....
But, if I could only have on it'd be an AK by just a smidge.

I'm sure that my skills aren't on par with the rifle's capability. I need to work on this more. I'm not sure the Aimpoint and me are on the same page yet, either.

AK vs AR again. I love both platforms. Why not add the SKS to the mix. I love that one too. All good rifles / platforms, Whatever fits, suits you best. I love all battle rifles & want to own many others.

Did you zero the irons first? You'll want to zero them, then adjust the aimpoint's dot until it sits directly on top of your front sight with a good sight picture.

My issued rifle is an M4. Every day when I go home and pick up one of my AK's, it feels like shaking hands with an old friend. No matter how many rounds they pay me to send downrange through an M4, I'll never like it. I am just as fast and just as accurate with an AK. I also have many reasons (from personal experience) to trust it more.

I had the same first impression. Thought buying a AR was a mistake and prefering my AK. Couldn't hit with it and thought "more accurate my ass!". Now 10 months later the AK sits in the safe. Give it some time and you might change your mind.

You may also zero each separately and independently.

I know, but it's a heck of a lot easier in my experience to do it that way. Granted, I ALWAYS start shooting a rifle with irons, though.

I have a couple AKs and a couple ARs.
Assuming both are setup with Iron sights, the AR "should be" more accurate. If we add scopes the AR should still be more accurate.
If we put the them into an endurance/abuse test, the AK should win.
If this isn't the case with you and your rifle, something is wrong with you or your rifle.
Fun is a different question altogether.
I find the AK generally boring. Boring is good for combat, but not great for a static range. It just runs and runs and runs. With hand loads, I couldn't get it to be more accurate. With a suppressor it was more interesting, but it required a Yugo with a gas shut off.
The AR is a different animal. There are lots of things that can be changed. With irons and scopes, it can be a precision tool.

Difficult to know at first, which you will prefer in the long run. The first reaction to a new gun... or new anything is to compare it to something similar and something familiar. In this case the new thing (Colt AR) in this case will either appear to be great or less than great. Either way, you're not getting an objective sense or basis for comparison. See how you feel six months and 1,000 rounds or so later.

I've yet to shoot an AK and I'm sure they are fun but I could shoot an AR all day long. My favorite thing to shoot.

I picked mine up four days ago...
but I have not shot it yet. Actually, I have never shot an AR and I had a RRA LAR-15 for about four years , but sold it last year to a long-time friend of the family. I can't see myself EVER preferring the AR over my AKs, but like I said, I have yet to shoot it.
Here is the RRA in a family photo:
I have since replaced the wire side-folding stock on the WASR-10 with the SFS SSAK-47 bump fire stock and I had the S-12 converted.
Here are the AKs added after the family photo:
If I could only have ONE rifle it would be the 56S - the AR would go bye-bye again!

Your not being over-joyed with your Colt is all about expectations.
It sounds as if your expectations were that your first time out with it would be a magical experience, with your rounds hitting exactly where you aim. At 100 yards there isn't a massive difference in accuracy between and AR and a good AK. Any chance you may have expected that the AR would be like shooting a target-seeking, laser guided match rifle?
My personal experience with being new to the AR platform is that you have a learning curve to go through, much of which centers on learning your rifle's ballistic curve, POA/POI, how to adjust the sights and your optic. Plus there's breaking in and smoothing a new trigger and learning it's break.
One question I have is which Aimpoint model did you get? Does it have the 2MOA or the 4MOA dot?

I think you have just discovered why they make both Chocolate and Vanilla, Fords and Chevy's, Blonds and Brunettes.

As far as range shooting and fun plinking my M4 with its Aimpoint is my favorite long gun! I can knock the fleas off a dog at 100 yards with the exact same M4 setup. On the other hand I have a Norinco AK47 that if western society broke down I would want in my hands because of its dependability. The M4 is just a better weapon. Spend some time and ammunition zeroing that Aimpoint real well and I'll bet you will agree with most people that the M4 is just better.

Restless28, Niiiiiiiiiice looking M4!!
I've owned an AK (clone), I've owned a Russian SKS (Tula) and I've owned a Colt HBAR.
The AK and SKS are gone. (I never fired either.) I have fired others, though.
The AK and SKS platforms do NOTHING for me.
Give me an AR platform, anyday!!
(Groundhogs at 250 to 300 yards are FUN to 'pop'!)
I did find over 500 rounds of 7.62x39mm (unopened) in the gunroom, a couple of weeks ago!
