Budget 1911
So my uncle who we call "Cheapskate Cowboy," is in the market for a 1911. When I say cheap he has a Hi-point (he's word "it has a life time warranty) and a S&W Sigma (because it was cheaper then the M&P).
Now he wants a 1911 but want to stay under $700 which for him means a little more then $600. So the question to the pro's is what if anything out there will be a quality, respectable purchase. He like the stainless and two tones finishes. He has mentioned Rock Island Armory, Para Gi, and America classic II. But I'm not a 1911 guy so I don't know.
Help me help him.

I've shot both the metro arms and RIA 1911's and they would serve your purpose nicely. I have a para GI expert and my only real complaint is the finish is awful. Also look into a Springfield GI model!

I have a RIA full size 1911 45 that I am very pleased with. I'm not the type of person that has to have the best, I have limited funds but had a desire for a 1911 that I bought for about $380 last year. I was going to purchase a 22 conversion also but I got a GSG 1911 22 instead, very comparable to the RIA 45.

Springfield MilSpec for sure, personally I prefer NM serial #s.
My GI Expert had issues and Para has possibly the worst customer service.

I guess it depends on his preferences and planned usage. Personally, I'd go SA Milspec, but the RIA is a really good value.

He has been bitten buy the 1911 bug. He doesn't want a compact or one cambered in 9mm. I knew he wants one that will can be customized later, as he has expressed an interest in trigger jobs, and sights. He says the stainless gives a cool factor. oh yay we both have a problem with our hands not being able to disengage the magazine without changing our grip, so remedies for that would be appreciated as well.

I recommend the Rock Island Armory 1911 with complete confidence. They are likely the best 1911 budget guns made. My buddy has had one going on ten years and its been completely reliable with FMJ and HP ammo using Wilson Combat mags and Colt Factory mags. The new RIA guns ship with ACT mags made in Italy which seem to be of good quality but we never used them so I can't tell you for sure about them.
All I know is that RIA guns are excellent for the money. Brand new they run just over $400 for the GI model and $450 or so for the Tactical model.

Anyone have a opinion of the High Standard 1911's? Been considering the Plain jane Mil Spec for me to improve as time & money is available.

For a quality budget 1911 look no farther than the Rock Island Armory 1911. They are very fine pistols. I have one I bought used for $275 OTD. It is extremely nice. I have a Springfield GI 1911-A1. It is a very nice pistol. It was also used... $400 OTD. New I don't know what it would have cost. Personally, I very much like the RIA. It is very well finished and runs superlatively... just like the SA 1911 GI, but it cost a lot less money.

I've had good luck with the Rock Island 1911. Great gun for the money.

I'm using Wilson Combat mags and a Wilson Combat trigger in my Rock Island Armory 1911 full size. Highly reliable and fun to shoot.

in the price range any of the foreign made 1911's (the various phillipino guns or base springfield) would be a good choice. If you can be patient you can occasionally find a base colt 1991 used in the same price range

If he wants a gun that a good gunsmith will be happy to work on.
He will want to go with nothing less than a Springfield Armory GI or Milspec pistol.
