Favorite .45ACP SD round?
I just picked up a XD-S and am looking for opinions on a good SD round. Federal HST has been my go to for 9mm and .40. Still the best choice for the .45? 230g?
Thanks for any advice.

I prefer the 230 gr loads. I find it very accurate. I'm partial to Speer Gold Dot myself.

I use Wichester Ranger or Speer Gold Dot 230 in my XDS. Both work great.

Federal 230 grain HST +P JHP expands to almost one inch in diameter. This is a non-bonded round that keeps it's jacket in all of the testing I have seen.

I like 230gr HST. I might consider a +P round though for something as short as the XDS though. I would like to see some chrono testing. I'm generally pretty leery of short barrel .45s.

+1
I like 230 gr in Winchester Ranger T, Speer GDHP & Federal HST.
But am a little concerned about 3" barrels too.

My favorite also, haven't tried them in my XDS yet, still breaking it in.

My XDS shoots really tight groups with Winchester PDX1. I have no idea what the velocity is out of the 3.3 inch barrel, but it recoils more than the Winchester White Box 230 FMJ rounds. I think the PDX1 is a hot non +P round. Im guessing about 820fps from the short barrel as the PDX1 usually gets about 920 fps from a 5 inch barrel.

You definitely didn't go wrong with choosing those. My opinion is HST, Ranger T, Gold Dots, and Golden Saber are all excellent choices!

I've heard lots of good things about Golden Sabers and Gold Dots.
I've also read/heard really good reports about Federal HST.
Right now, my 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 acp pistols are stoked with Federal HST.

Remington Golden Sabers are about the most reliably feeding 45 ACP loads. Both in 230 and 185 grain loads. The 230 grain load is fairly mild and has low muzzle blast. There is a non +P standard pressure 185 grain load that is not common or easy to find but it is a good load. The 185 +P load is the most common of the Golden Sabers and it is one of the hottest factory loads.

Good choice...this is my favorite. For me there's no noticeable difference in recoil between the standard load and the +P, and I'm just as accurate with either.

As long as you get a named brand, I don't think you can go wrong with a 45ACP!

for a short barreled pistol like XDS, I would opt for a lighter 185gr loads to compensate for the velocity loss. just my 2 cents. try the regular loads first before you jump in the +P .45 acp bandwagon.

Amen! Get the diameter with a lot of speed! The Corbon Dpx 185 +P's are as good as it gets for a 45acp! Pure copper is second to none!

The general rule is, the shorter the barrel, the heavier the bullet. I would stick with 200--230 grain.
