Google Nexus

I picked up a Google Nexus today from Staples... Not really sure why I bought one.

I had an Asus Transformer 10.1 and took it back because it's too big to carry and yet not a real laptop. I'm not really sure what I would do with it.
The Nexus was kind of cheap and it could be fun. For the price it can be just a toy.

I'll report back if there is any interest.

Id be interested to hear about it. I've been thinking about picking one up.

Quick question. All the pics online show an odd interface, I'm guessing that's just some app they were showing and the screens basically the same as always.

Sweet - that's what I want for my birthday! Hope it's as good as the critics make it out to be!

By default the Nexus is in portrait mode, not landscape.
Doesn't always like switching to landscape.

The interface of Jelly Bean is very different from Ice Cream Sandwich.

captainstormy, the UI is very different but after a few hours of playing around, I like it.

The display is very crisp and sharp. It aint no Retina but it's better than my friend's Samsung or the Asus I had.

It is quite responsive. The hardware, other than screen size, is about the same as the Asus Transformer TF300 but it feels and works faster.

The voice recognition is very well done and I have been driving my wife crazy with "Hey, look at this cool thing it can do."

Youtube and cnn.com videos play very smoothly and the sound is in sync.

I am using the same 'transmount.sh' script to connect to Kubuntu as a drive. I'm looking for a better networking solution.

I know this is not much so far but I've only had the Nexus a day. More later.

P.S. I paid the extra $50.00 to get a 16 gig storage model rather than the standard 8 gig. Worth it? <Shrug>

Nice, I can't wait till mine gets here. I love pretty much everything about my Nook Color (CM7) except the lack of processing power. The nexus fixes that.

Did I mention that sound from the built in speaker is not only clear but can be very loud?

The user manual is located in the list of books pre-installed. Text is very good and easy on the eyes.

Switching between portrait and landscape mode.
Ignore all the advice to hack the system, yada, yada.
Great bunch of tips.

I'm interested in it. I do wish it was a 10 inch tablet thou. I think Ill probably pick one up still thou, they are pretty cheap.

I'm concerned about the revamped UI. That's mainly got nothing to do with anything I've heard thou. There just seems to be so many bad (imo) changes in Linux and Windows UIs lately that I've become skiddish about any UI change.

I had a 10" tablet and didn't like it. 7" is much easier to manage.
Rumor has it that Apple will be shipping a 7". They are handy.

As for the UI, I like Jelly Bean better.

A lot of people say that about size. Myself, I prefer the 10 inch tablets. To me a 7 inch tablet isn't really that much larger than my phone to warrant carrying a second device.

I also never thought it was hard to carry a 10 inch tablet anywhere myself. I've taken them while traveling or when I expect to need them at a friends house (use them for pen and paper rpgs alot, really geeky I know).

Can you use an App to install/move apps to the SD card?

I don't believe the nexus has an SD card.

Well, I still have the Nexus 7. I still really like it.
It is in no way a laptop replacement for me but it's nice to have.

Just got back from a 5 day mini vacation and I took the Nexus and it's great for reading emails and checking the weather and such.

I loaded a couple of TV shows on it and watched some of them and with ear phones the sound is very good and the picture is better than good.

After reading the docs I found out how to unlock landscape mode, except when 'Home'. Nice.

I rooted it and bought a microUSB to USB cable and could connect flash drives and SD cards and such but I put it back.
As a node on my wireless network I can move around whatever files I like and so far see no other reason to root it.

I still think 7" is the perfect size for a tablet and am very happy with the Nexus 7.

Agree - nice tablet

+1 from me. Received mine as a birthday present from my girlfriend (of course she uses it as much as I do) - watched a movie on a drive out to the ocean, and read a book on it whilst camping on the sand.

It gets my stamp of approval and hers as well; she'll be buying one for her sister for Christmas.

Another +1 here. Been using the N7 for several weeks now. The usb-otg cable + root + stickmount opens up lots of possibilities including external USB hard drives.

This tablet has many features similar priced tablets do not have. GPS in offline mode is great. So is the sleep/wake function with a case that supports that feature. No problem streaming content and moving files to and from the N7 on my local network.

I've got an unlocked Samsung Galaxy Nexus and I love it. Android 4.1 is really a nice improvement over previous versions.
