"In shape": Adjective. Possessing the strength to lift a 33 round mag, the coordination to load it into a G26, and the conditioning to perform a tactical reload without wheezing.

Ok I'll add some numbers for you,
In shape
Body fat % below 15
Able to do 4-5 pull ups
Bench close to body weight
squat body weight
Good shape
% below 15
More then 5 pull ups
Bench press more then body weight
Squat 1.5 times body weight
Great shape
% below 12
Do 10 or more pull ups
Bench 1.5 times your body weight
Squat 2 times your body weight.
Those are just approximations, I know guys that are below 5% body fat and can't lift their own body weight squatting. And then you have power lifters who may be 18+% body fat and squatting close to or over 1000 lbs, so it's al relative with what your goals are.

Leap tall buildings in a single bound
Shape is relative to age and desired goals. I'll never again be in the shape I was when I was 16. But my goal isn't to run a 15 minute 5K anymore either.
At the age of 58 my goal is to lose fifteen pounds, walk up five flights of stairs without breathing hard and be able to get back into the same clothes I wore when I was 50.
I'm still working on the leaping tall buildings part.

When I was younger I wanted to look good, run like a deer, and be strong. That doesn't work for me anymore. Now I define in shape by how I feel and how I perform the activities that I do and enjoy doing.
I work out with my children sometimes but I have to think about how I go about it. It has been quite an eye opener. I have found that pride can hurt, so I pick my battles more carefully.

This response neglects any cardio vascular conditioning. Unless you are a PLer or OLer cardio fitness should be part of the equation.

The real definition of in shape is; The ability to have a high work capacity across broad modal times and domains.

"In shape" for what, exactly?
Strong like bull might have zero endurance. Lots of endurance might have zero power/strength.

I planned on getting in shape, but the more I know the more those questions come up.
What shape do I want to be in?
How will it effect my long term health?
Some power lifters are FAT and I don't think it is good for their health. But they can lift small cars!
Some body builders look really good, but I don't know what this does to the body over time.
Some bicyclist I could break them over my knees and I am not that strong.
I know where I am is not good, but I am not sure where I want to go. I am trying to set goals, but....?

Keep this in mind:
- athletes train to maximize their performance in their sport.
- YOU are training to "be fit", "look good", "feel good", etc.
You need a routine (or routines) that you will stick with that you enjoy. You might want to concentrate on pushups, pullups, "burpees", situps, and such rather than get all worked up over trying to use a machine. Swim, ride bike as well.

Try an army pt test. See where you are at. If one is a lot lower then another work on that to get about even then set a goal based on that. When you hit that raise it or focus on something specific.
I know i will never be a marathon runner but would like to do a couple miles. I want to strong and solid.

well that makes me in even greater shape. 51 yrs old, 189 lbs. 9%body fat(actually had it checked last week). Bench 250(yeah not great, just not good with those), shrug 550 on shrug sled, curl 100 pounds on a preacher easily. Amazes me how my body fat can be so low, when I eat so much crap. Wonder if the 3 hours of tennis on saturday, 3 hours on Sunday, and at least 3 hours during the week have anything to do with it. I would guess I lose 4-5 lbs after each tennis session, I drink anywhere from 4-5 quart bottles of Powerade zero each match. Still fit into jeans I have owned since high schoo easily with a 32 inch waist/34 when CCWing.

Dead lifts do not tear up backs, they make backs healthy.
Name me one person that dead lifts heavy on regular basis that has a bad back?
