Think of it this way - a specific volume of 20% oxygen and 80% inert gas measured at STP or any ATM level is still only 20/80.
If someone increases the percentage of oxygen beyond 20%, it becomes that much more effective as an chemical oxidizer. Pressure doesn't increase chemical reactivity.

I'll take your word for it, chemistry classes were too long ago, can't remember any details... Just remember something about oxygen crosslinking with rubber. I only took 1 semester of chemistry, the minimum... didn't like it, didn't get it...
I'm sure the body's reaction does depend on the combination of the fraction of oxygen as well as the pressure, but that must have to do with the biology, if the strictly chemical reactions don't care about anything but the fraction of oxygen.

I'm a bit of a science geek, guilty as charged... lol.
Scuba diving with nitrox got me exposed to all this partial pressures of oxygen stuff. Chemistry class, who cares, it won't kill you if you don't get an A.
But diving with nirox (air with extra oxygen added), if you goof up and go up too deep for the % of oxygen in your mix, or switch to a higher oxygen mix for decompression too deep, you can go into convulsions, spit out the reg and drown. CNS system goes hinky from the oxygen. Its actually called oxygen toxicity. I think if you were in a hyperbaric chamber, it wouldn't be fatal at those doses, dial it back a bit and the convulsions stop. Just that convulsing under water usually leads to drowning if you don't have a full face mask setup.
But I always thought it was weird that oxygen could be toxic...
Air conditioning's out tonight, too hot, can't sleep...

Ontonogan is one of those places that has a PD strictly for citing tourists for revenue, because nothing else happens up there!
In other news 7 homicides in flit over the last week, which is sadly not even close to a record.

That's what I've been reading is that area of Michigan is getting pretty bad. Has any officers been hurt yet?

They don't have maintenance people for that?

None seriously this year, we have had a couple deputies injured in traffic crashes trying to get back in the city when SHTF, one State trooper took two rounds to the vest early in the year, was treated and released the same day. Between Flint, Pontiac, Saginaw, and Detroit. They are all within 100 miles of each other all along I-75.
Flint is incredibly violent for it being a fairly small city, and Detroit is just as violent but spread over more miles. It's no longer killing over drugs, it is more just name calling or quite literally stepping on someone's new shoes.
As soon as I have my degree I am moving north away from all this chaos!

about 475 miles to the northwest, the part of Michigan that's closer to Duluth Minnesota than Detroit. It is completely different up there, the most crime I heard of while on vacation was a college student from "down state" getting busted with 30 atavan pills. In this area you may not even go to jail for that.

We had a good time at family, and Niagara Falls. Now, on the way back Home. Presently, sitting at a table at a New York rest stop, enjoying camomile, and Italian coffee.

Totally different.... Ox tox is too much oxygen, caused by going too deep with too much oxygen in your mix getting forced into the tissues from the pressure, is cured by coming up... Regular scuba, not an issue until you're over a couple hundred feet, only a problem when breathing air enhanced with extra oxygen.
Bends is set up by too much nitrogen, triggered by coming up too fast... Nitrogen that was absorbed in the tissues while deep flash to gas when the pressure drops too suddenly from ascending too fast. Sort of like a shaken pop, the nitrogen is in suspension, until you open the pop, the pressure drops fast, and the gas turns into bubbles, embolism ensues. In the brain, in the heart, lungs, could be any or all.
The enriched oxygen blends (nitrox) mean less nitrogen being breathed, so less chance of getting the bends. But you have to compute the depth limit for that particular mix and be absolutely sure you don't violate it.

Not sure, I think Ontonogan had our jail software along with records... but don't quote me on that, hard to remember, there were a number of agencies, and was back around 2005-2007.

Flint made a couple of the "10 worst cities in America" regarding crime... I think per capita it is giving Detroit a run for its money. Not sure about officer fatalities, but don't think so. Thankfully as bad as things get, that's still rare, though not rare enough. Last Detroit officer I remember was Ofc. Huff. I remember that one since he was gunned down on my old paper route, on Schoenherr btw State Fair and 8 mile...
Was a couple of years ago.

Just got sworn in today, picked up badge and ID, firearms training starting week after next then quals... Just a reserve gig, not a real PO...

In the US, apartment landlords provide the maintenance for the apartments; you're actually not allowed to do much yourself.

That's what I thought. I knew a little about the bends (mostly from reading "Without Remorse" by Tom Clancy, lol), and had heard of oxygen toxicity, but I didn't know the technicalities of it. Thanks!

Have fun training,
I'm working on trying to find a different reserve gig because of the current condition of good ol' Flint.
PM where you are starting so I know where to avoid.
