Nice carbine! I had one just like it back in the 80's. One of the guns I regret letting go. I'm waiting for a nice 20" rifle to show up. Anyways, congrats & enjoy!

I have a Colt SP1 20" rifle with an additional Colt 16" carbine upper group. I'm not sure of the year, but I would guess mid-late '80s/pre-AWB. I'm not a Colt expert. Rifle was inherited. I've shot it once; don't really know what to do with it. I have another primary M4gery that I don't mind beating on.
I was hoping it might be worth closer to $2K.

Very nice sp1!
I have one my dad bought me when I was 17. I think the carbines were originally sold by Colt as "Sporters". I have taken a couple classes with it. Classes were Basic Carbine and Intermediate Carbine by PFDC, now known as FIRE Institute. Great instructors. Carbine was light, accurate and worked flawlessly. Students with HBARS were having a tough time at the end of the day due to the weight. Thousands of rounds through the SP1. Never missed the forward assist, even with sloppy chamber checks.

The A2 is ridiculous, a rifle as heavy as those a century ago, shooting a 5.56. I bought a Century Arms A1 style (includes Colt parts) for $650 and really like it.

An A2 sure isn't the sme eight as an M1 Garand or a M1903!
Not sure where You got your numbers, but they are incorrect

It isn't much difference. The A2 weighs 7.9 lbs., the 1903 weighs 8.6, and the Garand 9.5. You would think in 100 years they could do better than that.

But you get the cool handguard, the cool adjustable rear sight and the cool front fourth of the barrel heavier.
On the other hand, the built-in brass deflector is nice for lefties, the heavier and longer buttstock is nice for cracking some heads and the half-birdcage flash suppressor/half muzzle compensator doesn't blow dirt up and have the wind sweeps it back onto your face like the M16A1 with the old full birdcage flash suppressor or the M16 with the tri-pronge flash suppressor.
HOWEVER, given my druthers, I'd rather lug the M16/M16A1 at 5.5-lbs. Can I carry something heavier? Sure, but it also doesn't spit out the 5.56mm caliber either.
I agree with you about the M16A2's heavier weight for a mousegun caliber. Though I don't know why the weight of 8.2-lbs stuck in my head. Maybe that's the rifle with empty mag?
