I started with a couple boxes, of 124 gr ammo, and made sure it ran OK with GoldDots then a couple 250 round boxes of 115 gr UMC from Wal Mart. Then a 900 round "sardine can" of TulAmmo on sale at Gander Mt.
Your best, and only necessary modification, is LOTSA PRACTICE!
Save your $ and buy ammo!
After 1-2 K rounds, you'll know if you need anything else.

After years of actively avoiding 9mm in favor of my 1911s, I bought a G17 simply because of all the uber cheap ammo out there.
A few months later a 26 joined the collection
I still am a big fan of 45ACP, but my Glocks get much more range time
I've left the 26 stock but the 17 has a Lone Wolf ported barrel and tru glow sights
Oh wait, they both have CTC sights, too
Enjoy!

I have a Colt 1911 but I prefer to carry my G19 Gen 4. Congratulations on buying your G17.
