Therma Cell

Has anyone used these. I just want an honest no B.S. review. If it works I think the price looks reasonable. Thanks

I live in the woods and also keep a boat next to coastal grasslands. I do not think Therma Cell is very effective. None of these type of products has worked for us when the buggers are intense. Slathering oneself with OFF & smoking a cigar still seems to be the most effective solution for me -- followed by a shower before hitting the rack, of course.

Sometimes winter has it's advantages.

I've seen some use them. It may depend on where & when you go. I grew up in the Northern U.P. of MI. to this day I have a much higher tolerance for a few mosquitoes buzzing around than the average person. Some go almost crazy at the sight of a trio of em.

I guess I don't have to worry about them fishing my favorite trout stream in later May in the remote parts of the U.P. of MI. That separates the men from the boys.

Not to bust any bubbles, but check out where there are more mosquitoes, the northern muskeg or the tropics? In season of course.

I'm down in SW Flroida where the bugs will carry you away at dusk and dawn;

Therma cells WORK.

They aren't that good if you are moving, but if you are in one spot for a while- hunting from a blind or a stand, fishing from a bank or a dock, sitting at a picnic table etc, they work very , very well; it takes about 10 minutes, but after that, the air in about a 8-10 circle will be pretty much bug-free....

I have used mine in the Everglades and the Big Cypress Swamp in July where the gnats and mosquitoes are about as bad as they get anywhere, and it has kept me pretty much bite free.

I use it in stands hog hunting in Fla. I've never been bitten by mosquitos in the stand. On the other hand we had a few burning around a campfire late one night, and I was bitten on an ankle after I took my boots off.

IMO they are a supplement to deet products.

I 'm in SE florida and it works, but keep in mind, I hunt in a counties with 40+ different species of mosquitoes and the TC has a hard time keep up during the day.

Best effectiveness is no wind and 1 or 2 TC going at the start of the archery seasons. You place the cells so your downwind of the fumes.

fwiw: NOt all mosquitoes seems deterent to whatever vapors it put off. I've actually witness mosquitoes landing on chest waders and trying to bite me thru it.

For me I use the TC and with a eucalyptus base oil repellent and get by fair good.

You do now ever state has Mosquitoes.

Elevation is not what your looking for. If you want to avoid mosquitoes, go to a dry place ( think of a desert ). Water is what they need to breed. Even in dought conditons, eggs can be present that hatches only during a raining season.

Cooler states has less of a population and produce less mosquitos hatchling due to it being short periods of the temp being hot enough to birth and hatch out. Alask has the most mosquitoes and world wide their's like over 1K_ species of them world wide.

My most common skeeter in my hood, is the asian tiger , very pesky little things that attacks your leg and feet. In the wild it's the culex and just as pesky, very active at late evening.

General rule, skeeters that bites feet are typically WestNile carriers and ones that bites neck and face are Malaria carriers.

I still trying to identify a mosquitos that we have down here, that's wide body and shape like a b2 bomber. Body is dark and when it lands upon you, you can easily feel it.

I use mine during the Spring turkey season here in WNY. It works well if you are stationary and there's no wind. If it's breezy just sit downwind of it. We have these annoying black flies that like to cluster up about 1/2 inch from your eyeballs just under the brim of your hat. It works good for them and it works damn good for mosquitoes.

I'm never going below 5,000 feet or into wet climates again.

Thermacell

Had two. First one wouldn't light. Second lit once. Took 'em both back to the store. Won't buy another one.

Only time I have not seen these lit, if the cartridge is not screwed in fully. I've had both internal striker-ignitor and non-ignitor ones and contest that in water, in mud they always light.

The trick with either wal is to insert cartridge fully, turn unit on; let teh butane or whatever gas is in the tube, fill the portal and then hit the striker button 2-5 times.

On the non-ignitor, same thing, but stick a lit match at the portal exit.

Therma-Cells are a must in SEFLA

I live in Mississippi, our mosquitoes can pleasure a turkey standing flat footed! Mosquitoes are our state bird! Early bow season, if you don't have a thermocell you literally may die haha! They are great as long as there is no wind/breeze!

The biting gnats are what bother me! There is a product called "Buggins" that is a God-send when around the MS River.

Buggins is good, but we use the noStinkin bugs or 29% repel spray. I personally like the eucalyptus oil base repellant. This along with a therma cells does wonders, but some places in the glades neither are 100% effective. And months of Aug/Sept into October are just down right nasty. I pray for nov/dec/jan to come around since it's more cooler and most of the hungry eating skeeters have already came and gone.

+1 on that. When it's relatively still I've been in some pretty nasty river bottoms and it's worked well. I use them a bit during bow season, but won't hit the turkey woods without one. for the price its worth a shot. I've used one for probably 4 years now. I hate all that OFF on my skin and face.

The buy-in is economical. They ream you on the refills. I think it works. But setters don't bite me that often.

They work extremely well. I`ve used them both turkey AND deer hunting, as well as night fishing, and you can see the cloud of bugs hovering above, but they won`t come down into the area you`re in. And much better than having DEET slathered all over.
