If SHTF, would you be able to arm your family, friends and neighbors?
Or, are you too attached to your collection? Would some guns remain in the safe even if some people on your side had not been armed yet?
I don't have a large enough collection to go very far, but I only have one gun I would have a little trouble handing to a neighbor. It's my grandpa's 1100. I would probably keep that on me, and then distribute the rest as far as they would go.
I thought of this when I saw the picture of Bac's 1911 collection. I would have a hard time handing almost any of those to a neighbor.

I won't have enough left over to arm my neighbors. My gang is my first priority.

I am adequately armed, but that's still not enough if you ask me. I have no problem defending myself and/or my home. What I am a little stumped about in this current "prepping" phase is logistical concerns. I live in a major metropolitan area, a major US city.
Riots would break out here first for the rest of you to see on the news, your cue get ready. I'd be scrambling to GTFO of town because if I were here I'd be perched atop the highest building/parking garage I could find picking off anyone who crossed the line that said, "cross this line you will be shot" that I would surely post in front of my apartment complex. I'd rather get out of Houston if and when something of that magnitude or likely higher given today's insane dynamics, would happen.
Getting myself, my family, my guns and ammo would be priority #1. I don't have all my ammo at the house there is another location where most of it is stored. There are a few guns there too. In a situation like that I think I'd grab the guns before food if I had to pick between the two.
One way or another I will get something to eat once I get to where I am safe. But after that, grabbing my 5 or 6 day supply of food I have stashed. All of this is pretty heavy and would take at least 5-10 trips back and forth through a parking garage to the car, unless with a dolly. But I do envision myself walking with at least 1 gun in hand if not one other person armed right next to me, while loading up. And a means for Authority figures to contact me if they ever got the situation under control. Check out this pic of Koreans in LA during the 92 riots:
http://www.google.com/imgres?um=1&hl...r:11,s:0,i:178
That's pretty much what I had in mind.

Family first, friends second.
Screw the neighbors.
In 12 years I have invited dozens of my neighbors to go shooting. Only three have taken me up on it. Only one of them has taken any advanced training.
We live in an earthquake zone. Every 6 months the state, counties, cities and churches make a big public push to prep for an event. I was my churches Emergency Preparedness Coordinator. I figure only 10%-15% of my neighbors have adequate supplies for even a month.
There is no way I am going to arm untrained, unprepared neighbors so they can come and fight me for my stuff.

Family and friends can pretty much cover themselves, I got their back if they need something more. Neighbors?... lol, I wouldn't give them access to the rocks on my property.

I've spent a lot of $$ on ways to defend my family while most of my so-called friends and neighbors think I'm crazy while they by useless disposable crap... With that said, they're on their own... My Family will have access to my collection until the last bullet, I'll give my best wishes to the others but wishes is all I have for them...

I've got my family covered. Any friends around here have themselves covered already. Neighbors should take care of themselves.

I see a lot of guys not trusting their neighbors. I can understand that. I barely know my neighbors. In fact I don't know them at all... But you never know what relationships will be forced to develop if SHTF.
My question was really more about being sentimentally attached to particular guns... Not so much whether or not you trust your neighbors.

My family and friends can arm themselves. Anyone who shows up unarmed is a loader.

I am capable of arming my family and some of the sheriff's department.
Friends. . . . they're already armed.
Neighbors. . . . . Most of 'em are why I'm armed and prepared.

I've always been told that I don't have enough food storage for a big event. I simply respond with...."Well, my neighbors all have great food storage....and I have guns." Problem solved.

I have a different neighbor every 6 months. I live in the heart of Houston. See this pic? That's my neighborhood.
Just curious, let's say you had 5 or 6 guns, and several thousand rounds of ammunition. Just getting that to the car if evacuation became necessary (it would surely be necessary for me, and unless the SHTF out of nowhere, with no warning whatsoever, I'd be leaving).
But lets say you have a few hours. Would you make an effort to designate a large enough room for all your ammo or would you sacrifice ammo to make room for food/water? I'd definitely bring a few jugs of water with me no matter what, and a little food, at least for a day or two. But some people have large food and water supplies. What if, all of a sudden, something went awry and you had to get your family, grab all your weapons, and GTFO.
But you have limited space in your vehicle. Would you rather bring ALL the weapons and just enough food to get by? Or the other way around? I say weapons. Weaponry is the first thing I made sure I had enough (well, for lack of a better word) of, before I started buying food and water. Which I only have about a weeks worth, at most of. It's so bulky it takes up soo much space. I do have 3 of these "Life Straws", purification straws said to purify up to 250 gallons of tainted water. I'd do my best to boil water first if it came to that, but these things could possibly be a lifesaver if it got ugly enough. I saw N.O. after Katrina, lemme tell you, we have taken many, MANY things for granted in our lives.
And am I the only one who believes radiation from Asia is polluting the global environment? Well I'm not, the tuna in Californa is found to be contaminated with radiation. That's the only thing the news reported on to my knowledge. I am not on any medication, so medical supplies will be fine with just a first aid kit, I'm talking about for the initial evacuation. There is no telling what kinda scenario could possibly lead to this need, and if it would be violent or not.
If so, then weaponry would be even more important. If a storm, just get out of town, take your valuables (which include guns and ammo), enough food to get you through a day or two, and drive far west to get a hotel, and try to do it before the other 5 million people in your city try to do the same thing.

In this rural area of Florida, a lot of my neighbors are already armed. I could spare a few handguns and a .22 rifle. I might even let the single shot 20 gauge go. My combat shotgun, .223 rifle and most of my handguns would be staying with me.
Two doors down from me, which is about 500 yards in my neighborhood, there is a guy that has enough to arm a lot more folks than me. He's got two huge gun safes that are packed to capacity. He's in the market for a third safe because he's got weapons that won't fit in his safe.
Where my guns are stored in the safe in a way that I can get to any one I want easily, his are stored for maximum use of space.
If the SHTF, he's my new best friend!

I've got several collectors I handle with care and rarely shoot. But, I'm not so attached to them I would trade my life, or my families, against keeping them pristine. Most of mine were made for hunting or SD, not so much target shooting, so they would see blood and guts as originally intended.

Family: absolutely.
Friends: most are cops or ex military. All are well armed and trained. We already have a plan in place in the event of social chaos.
Neighbors: only if I like them.

Yes. I can pass out 91/30s and a 5 round stripper clips to just about everyone in the neighborhood.

I could but I doubt I would. At least for neighbors. Family I would. Don't really have any close friends where I live at now. Being a behavioral health clinician in a small town really bars me from having any relationships with locals in my area.
