Sweating on your primary carry weapon

Hey guys/gals,

Was looking through GT, couldn't find a thread that addressed it, so here it is.

I carry my G19 gen4 IWB in a Galco Kingtuk on a daily basis. However, I generally don't wear an undershirt when dressed in a T shirt. I've found that having it on my 4:00 IWB, I sweat there a lot. I'm wondering what effect sweating will have on the Glock.
I know aesthetically it won't make a difference; you could take a key and scratch the slide without making a mark. I'm more concerned with the internal mechanisms. I do strip and clean it frequently.

Thanks in advance,
J

id just oil it weekly during your sweaty season

keep practicing with it atleast monthly and if it ever fails due to being clogged with sweat then buy a replacement at that time

i think your over thinking it....

I was more thinking along the lines of, could it rust the extractor spring or corrode the trigger mechanism, anything like that

I have taken my LC9 and Glock 23 IWB on hiking and canoe trips. I just wipe them down after I get home. Haven't seen any indication of rust yet.

Well, since I grew up with blue-steel handguns, so I'm accustomed to checking & maintaining my guns to make sure they're they don't develop rust.

I've known some folks with some pretty caustic sweat, though. A friend of mine had sweat that could rust a blue steel revolver literally overnight.

I know another guy whose sweat has badly etched the clear-coat on his 642, while mine (ordered at the same time and which has been carried & used a LOT more than his) shows no such signs of wear or damage.

Even though many of my carry weapons are either stainless, or have some sort of hardening treatment which is intended to help mitigate corrosion (Tenifer, Melonite), I still check them to make sure the don't "rust" or oxidize.

I remember watching guys carrying blue steel revolvers on-duty take the time to wipe them down at the end of the shift, after having carried them in leather holsters ... and in the rain. I didn't see all that many rusted blue steel revolvers, all things considered. A little common sense and preventive maintenance goes a long way.

Wipe it off when you take it off your hip and every month pull the slide and give a quick clean and lube. If you want to be extra cautious do it every other week and put some cleaner on the towel when you clean it off for the day

I usually wear a t shirt under a t shirt but that's more to protect my baby soft hide than to protect the gun.

I wear a sleeveless t-shirt under my shirt 98% of the time. But just wipe down and oil after a period of serious sweat and you should be good

No T, 10 years on G27 always on. No problem. Cleaning after shooting only, or to blow off lint.

Your Glock will be okay being cycled through this regime. A bigger question will be your ammo. The ammo in the chamber/mag will be cycled through temperature, humidity, and possibly corrosive salt exposures to the primers. It may pay to cycle your ammo more frequently than usual during hot weather.

I carry my Glock 27 in hot sweaty conditions. It never shows any effect. As to ammo, I have not has a problem yet. Lint builds up some in the trigger guard, in the grip hole and on the outside bottom of the magazine. I clean it occasionally and all is fine.

The only concern for me is that I carry the extra magazines in a pocket and I make sure balls of lint does not build up there.

Ditto. I find wearing an undershirt makes IWB so much more comfortable. And, I live in South Florida.

It won't have any effect.

I wear my glocks in a Kramer #2 under an untucked t shirt with the gun and holster against my skin. After all day carrying in dc heat and humidity the sweat is dripping off. Just field strip it and wipe it down with an oiled rag at the end of the day.

As already noted, each person's sweat has slightly different corrosive levels. And some sweat more profusely than others. No control over that.

But you can on a weekly or monthly basis strip your gun and wipe with a silicone cloth.

Unless you got rivers of sweat running down into the gun itself, I would not worry so much about it. Just maintain it on a regular basis and you will be fine. I bucked hay all day in 90+ degree weather this weekend with my 19 on my hip, and it is fine.

You think you exaggerate, but I've been there. On a humid summer day in SE Ohio, I can go outside to work around the farm and in 15 minutes I look like I've been swimming in my clothes. I've found parts of my guns rusting that I didn't even know could rust (did you know that the front sight blade on a Ruger KLCR is not stainless like the rest of the barrel and stress frame?). I've corroded the brass bullet casings on revolvers because sweat dripped down on them and into the cylinder, and had corrosion start on the extractor spring on my P-32.

That all said, Glocks are one of the BEST as far as sweat and corrosion, in my experience. In hot weather, I wear OWB in a kydex holster (I can turn a leather holster into a sopping wet mess that ends up with white salt rime on it when it dries) or in a Wilderness Safepacker on my pants belt or tool belt, and the Glock comes through my torture tests with flying colors. Regular external wipedowns and periodic field strips to wipe/clean and oil are all it ever seems to need.

When you're doing hot, sweaty, dirty, outside work, the Safepacker protects the gun better than any other holster I've used. In those conditions, I'm typically not worried about concealment, per se.

ETA: There's really no substitute for an undershirt, either. A light wife-beater tank top undershirt does wonders for reducing the amount of sweat on the gun, and reduces chafing on your skin.

If a Glock can survive that guy that kept in SOB and it smelled like poo then it surely can survive a little sweat.

My Glock is a ugly as when I started this sweat season.

But I carry a LCP when it's 80+, it's 81 now.

I live in North Texas and we get very hot summer weather...... I started out with horsehide aiwb Galco holsters, but later changed to kydex (Dale Fricke Archangel) aiwb holsters. With the kydex, sure you sweat all over the back of the holster, but at the end of the day when I take it off......I just wipe the back with a damp cloth and it's good to go. The design of the holster protects everything except for the stock and if you carry a Glock I don't think a little sweat is going to harm the polymer.

It's a Glock. Don't care much about it. However the holster was an issue. I used a crossbreed for a year & when I sweat it made the leather(horsehide) feel icky. I switched to a all kydex & it's much better now.
