Colt LE6920MP-R or S&W M&P15X
Which one of those would be best to get?
I know the default answer is Colt...
but would it be worth it to sell a new MP15X to get the LE6920MP-R ?

If I liked the Smith I'd probably keep it unless I got a great price for it. Smith makes a nice AR no doubt.

I'll start the Kool Aid drinkin'
Colt
A local agency to me bought the Smiths, it's going Colt on the next round. The Smiths perform 'okay' but, have had some problems. That said, and it's plain and simple and less prejudice, the S&W rifle is not a Colt.

If anything the Colt would be an upgrade over the MP15X but if I can sell the MP15X I may as well get the AR that I've been wanting...LaRue PredatAR 5.56

I vote Colt. Why? It looks good next to my father in laws Colt SP1 slabside from 1975.

I was kind of in your boat holding a Bushmaster. Needed a working rifle, went with a 6920. The Colt is top notch. The Colt rides with me on special occasions... an LMT protects me as EDC... the BM finally sold at a loss because I just would never have used it.
This ramble is basically to say, with ARs, get what you want and buy top tier. "Buy once / Cry once." If you're asking questions about the S&W, you will always have those questions in your mind.
The LaRue is A-1 kit.. and if it's what you want, do it. For some reason, and varied reasons, ARs are a personal taste. You'll never be satisfied if you don't save the funds and go for the AR you really want... for whatever your reason.

What kind of problems did they have with the Smith?

Why? What do you think the Colt will do better?
If the M&P works fine for you & you don't have problems again...why?
You do know the differences are in the upper & BCG? You could save $ & just buy an upper & better BCG.

The S&Ws are decent (I have one) but if it's for duty use and you can afford it, switch to Colt.

The S&W is a decent AR, but if it were my money I would get the Colt no question.

Early on, FTF, FTE and a couple of canted FSBs. The FTF could not be attributed to the magazines and went away after some Carrier scuffing. The extractors were upgraded to cure the FTE.
To S&W's defense, those were its early run rifles. I think the QC issues have been addressed. That said and still IMO ONLY, the Smith is a pleasure rifle that may do some work. The Colt is a work horse that will pleasure plink at the dump.
These days, the money difference is minimal between the two rifles. So minimal, that to not pay the additional one or two Franklins for the Colt is not a prudent choice.

I would go SW because Colt is not the major M16 contracter. They lost it to FN. Verdict poor Q-control by Colt. Colt no thanks.

Source?
FN underbid Colt when they lost sole source, I have never once read Colt was dropped due to poor QC. Colt still makes the M4, which has in some branches, replaced or begun replacing the M16.
For the OP, a Colt is a very solid choice. There is a reason why they're the standard that all AR-15 rifles are judged on. There are a few better options (not S&W) and a lot worse. And no, I'm not a Colt kool-aid drinker, I don't currently own one.

AS much as I hate colt, This isn't close to accurate.
FN does have the current contract for m16's. Only because the gov needed help in getting them made because colt only wanted to make the m4. The gov awarded them the contract for M16's. This left colt making the more popular M4's.

Another good thing about owning a Colt is the fact that you don't have to second-guess your choice every time questions like this come up. Get the Colt and don't look back.

Where do you get your incorrect information? You're obviously not well informed. Post less, read more.

Someone doesn't understand how the government works. They are in the business of spending the least amount of money possible. If you want to win bids, you have to be the lowest bid. It has nothing to do with the quality of the rifle.
