10mm vs .45

Thinking of adding another Glock to the family. The more l read about the 10mm the more l like it. I would go with the g29 if went that route. Was going for the g30 because l have always believed .45 was probably the best bg stopper. Any opinions either way would be helpful.

I would probably lean towards the G30 because with the cost of ammunition I would/do shoot it more. Also I do not feel it necessary to turn anything into molten glass...

I have the G29 and the G30. Both are great, especially as carry guns, but the G30 is cheaper to feed. And .45ACP ammo is more readily available.

The perfect solution for me is the G30SF 45ACP for a defensive, CCW/HD pistol at a range under 25 yds. which can be quickly converted to 10mm with a 45-10mm conversion barrel and G29/G20 mags for woods protection and offensive work beyond 25 yds. While the big-bore .45 is reassuring for personal defense, the relatively flat trajectory and greater energy of the 10mm round (compared to 45ACP) makes it quite easy to get accurate hits out to 100 yds with a red dot sight for the pistol.

If you like, a 4.70" extended 45-10mm conversion barrel is available from KKM for the G30/30SF; longer than the stock G20 barrel at 4.61".

The .45 Super round is also a good choice for woods protection and hunting with a Glock. One of my pistol instructors hunts deer with a Glock 21 and .45 Super ammo.

Im in the same boat as you OP. I want to get a big bore Glock. I'm leanin toward the G21 though, and I'll get the 45-10mm conversion kit for bear country if I ever find myself out there.
The G21 is just a classic .45. Get some arredondo +4 mag extensions and you've got quite a setup. Now the only hard part is finding a G21 SF RTF2!

I've got two G-21's that are also set up for 45 Super. This leaves me with absolutely no need to rush right out and buy a 10mm.

Im going through the same.....

I am either going to get a G21sf or a G20sf for my next gun......

I think i will finally go with the 10mm, just because it is the biggest/baddest of the Glock...

i already have my ccw guns covered....now i just want something that gives a big BOOM

edit: and seems like ammo is just as expensive whether 45 or 10mm...

I'd vote for .45. I love my Gen4 G21 and the long range plans include a G30 to go with it.

Just a 21 lb recoil spring works well for a G30 and G21 to shoot .45 Super. I suggest a stainless steel guide rod to go with it. I'm interested in the set-up Arc Angel uses for the G21 and 45 Super.

I have a G21, and if I ever thought it would take something more than 14 .45 rds to get the deal done, I would bring my 870... ;-)

.45 is cheaper, and readily available, and in the future those two things will be vitally important.

Yes, those two calibers and 9x25Dillon too for the G20 and G29.

I recently discovered others have reported successfully shooting .40S&W in the G30 slide using a G29 10mm-40S&W conversion barrel. I haven't tried it personally, but the idea is intriguing.

That's good advice right there.

.40 is cheaper than .45 and you can shoot 9mm, 357sig and 9x25 from your 10mm. I use Pearce +2 extensions with 10 rd. Glock 30 springs in the 10 rd. 29 mags with 100% reliability. You now have a 12+1 compact 10mm, the same size as a G30 with 10 rd. mags.

I also put a 36 upper on the 29 frame and use with G30 mags sometimes. I like both cartridges but if you want to get a 10mm - scratch that itch!

10mm, underwood ammo is full power and reasonably priced, the "10 is too expensive to shoot" is just stupid

This ^, cost of ammo is no longer a valid argument.

If you're going to go the route of many 10mm enthusiasts and get a Lonewolf Barrel and Slide, I'd bet a 21 and then you'll have the ability to shoot both calibers.

.45 is great for self defense, but it is lacking in the woods. The bigger diameter makes penetrating animal hides and skulls a craps shoot.

Okay, the .45 is not a S&W .50, and I have not shot many critters in self defense in the woods or in the streets, (Put many a carcass in my freezer though on purpose!lol) but I sure pity the poor fool in either place that gets popped with a hydra shock round having been dispatched from my G21...

I live in N Idaho, on acreage, bordering a national forest, and yes there are bears wolves, coyotes, moose, and elk, etc., ...any of which who were having a bad day would do an unarmed man potentially some serious damage.

I carry the G21 in those very woods and fear not.

Exactly, the price of 10mm is the same, if not cheaper then the price of .45 ACP these days. IMO, it all boils down to
ready availability, anywhere you go that sells ammo, 9 times out of 10 sells .45 ACP. 10mm, while not impossible to find, is a little difficult to track down at times. Some gun stores I know of just won't carry it due to it's lowish demand. I love the 10mm, and I'm not suggesting you never get one. just get one a little later down the road. Hell, maybe even your next gun buying go around, but for right now, .45 or 10? I'll throw my vote in the .45's hat.

There are many reasons to get one or the other, some people will tell you that 1 is better then the other because of what the intend to shoot with it. But when I look at getting a new gun I look at ballistic tables for that caliber. The 45 is a good round but when it comes down to it the 10mm is a more potent round depending on the ammor load. The 10mm was originally developed for the FBI but was too "HOT" or too "BIG" for them so they cut it down and made the 40. The G20/29 combo is a great gun, you can shoot 10mm, 40cal, and 357SIG, out if it with just a barrel, and get the top end from a 21/30 and shoot 45 too! These guns are so simular that this is going to be a I like this one over that one just becasue. I was going to get the 20/29 but they are harder to find then the 21/30 so that is why I got thoes, I still want the 20/29 and dont know if I will buy a complete gun or just the upper from glockmeiser or not, but the 20/29 are hard to get in some places!

I ordered a G20SF for my first Glock. My LGS said it should be here by Wednesday. I currently owe pistols in 380acp, 9mm & .45acp. The G20 will be my home defense pistol. I carry my LCP380 in my front pocket, and my Kahr CW45 in an IWB holster. Looks like there are a number of places making good 10mm ammo. The above mentioned Underwook looks fine, and so does the Bitteroot Valley ammo. I will shoot 180 gr FMJ and HP at the range, but keep it loaded with the 180 gr HP stuff at home.

I am strongly in favour of your statement in general but you can't do 9mm unless you can modify the lips of the 10mm magazine. If you have found a way to do this please tell because I have 9mm and .38 Super barrels for my G20. The 9mm, .40S&W and 357SIG magazines are narrower and shorter front to back and don't fit properly in the G20. Because the LOA is only a little shorter for the .40 and 357SIG the length is not a problem and the lips are the same width apart.

They're both great. If you want to get cheaper ammo available almost anywhere, get the .45. If you get 10mm you can shoot cheaper by buying a .40 cal conversion barrel for it. I really enjoy my G21sf and 20sf, have had several 29's and 30's and I always end up selling them. I always recommend the .45 over the 10mm to most everybody.
