Any reaon not to carry someone else's gun?

My dad is leaving his 27 with me this weekend since he is going out of town. I carry a 19 normally and kinda want to carry his 27 this weekend to get a feel for how it carries (to see if I want one). I have shot it enough to be comfortable with it, and I do the detail cleaning on it (he is uncomfortable doing anything more than a field strip) so I know it's in good shape. So really my only concern is legal... Legally I can carry anybody's gun right?

The N-frame M27 is a huge gun when compared to the K-frame M19.

Hey that was my first thought. S&Ws.

As long as the gun isn't stolen property you are fine.

Some stated have gun serial numbers attached to the carry permit. You can carry that gun, and only that gun. It is not common, but there are a few examples of this. If that is not the case for you (and I don't believe it is), then go for it.

I won't carry a handgun until I've put a few rounds through it to see where it hits and make sure it's reliable. Of course with a revolver you pretty much know it'll go "bang" when you pull the trigger but I'd still put a few rounds through it to see where the sights are set. JMHO, YMMV.

If your state allows it go for it. But put a little range time in so that you know the gun. 40 in subcompact kicks a little more then that 9. I'd hate for you to need it and not know what to expect or how the gun is going to act.

Sent an iPhone 4s sitting next to a Glock 17 loaded with 19 round of +P+ ammo.

If you have to put a cap in someone's ass with the 27, the popo might keep it for a while. The old man good with that?

What if it is a three and half inch M27?

Several years back I got a carry permit in Nevada and was told whatever gun I wanted to carry I had to qualify with it and it had to be on the permit. If Oregon has no requirement or anything like that, then it should be fine. Ask your local Sheriffs office.

I don't carry something I'm not practiced with.....not trying to sound crass, but I don't carry a handgun for goofs.

I'd say if your state allows it and you've shot the gun enough to feel confident with it, go for it!

Sent while on my shimpin boat down in Bayou Le Batre Louisiana with LT Dan by my side.

For those concerned about carrying a gun I'm not practiced with, refer to my OP. I have shot it plenty enough to be confident with it. I shoot it just as well as my 19. My question was purely legal. We don't have our CHLs attached to any serials in Oregon... So I guess I'm good. I have my dad's permission too, so he knows the risks of losing it if I have to use it.

In Michigan it is totally legal. In Oregon, I do not know the rules.

This. Though, I have a feeling he'd be cool with you or a loved one not being dead or grievously wounded.

You've obviously shot/handled/are proficient with it. Some states have laws against "borrowing" guns, dunno bout yours.

while I don't know your state law in my state (NY) it is illegal to have posession of a pistol not listed on your permit by serial number. Can only carry what is "registered" to you.

It is a well known fact that if a law-abiding person kills someone, for whatever reason, they will have to forever live with a certain amount of guilt.

Is is not a well known fact however, but if a law-abiding person kills someone, for whatever reason, with another person's gun, the other person (gun owner) will have to forever live with that guilt.

Shrinks call it ""Guilt Transference by Ownership".

That is why so many criminals prefer to use stolen guns rather than simply purchasing their own.

May I borrow your gun while you carry your Dad's gun?

I was warned that in my state if you have an accident with a car in someone Else's name, the other party can be sued for contributory negligence. Had an accident in my fathers car but we have the same first and second name. (lawyer source).

Don't know about guns, but why not?
