FBI still using 10mm Auto in HK MP5/10?
Is the FBI still making use of the 10mm Auto in the HK MP5/10? I've heard yes, but haven't been able to verify.
Can anyone say either way, and if so, to what extent?

Don't know if that was a limited thing or is the way the whole agency is moving. The AR platform is really pushing out the MPs, in all calibers.

I was told that by an armourer at HQ. Maybe it varies across the country.

They are still using the 10 in some places. One on my employee's husband works for the FBI in PA and still uses the 10, but expects to be transitioned completly over to M4 in a few years.

A 10mm MP5 is so awesome that it's sort of like King Arthur's sword in the stone - the FBI doesn't have anybody awesome enough that they can even pick one up. That made them impractical for FBI use.

Considering the FBI, DHS and etc buy a LOT of .40sw ammo I honestly don't see the reasoning in using a 10mm carbine. Sure the 10mm is more robust round than the .40 however I doubt the feds would use full house 10mm loads anyway. I also doubt the .40 JHP bullets used in 10mm would hold up to the velocities you would see out of a 10mm carbine.

They got them back in the real early 90's to go with the then issued S&W 1076's, have had them since but it sounds like they are doing away with them. I've got to handle one but they were out of ammo so i couldn't pull the trigger

I can't imagine there would be anything left except for forensic evidence after some agents with these cannons went blasting into a situation.

My dad was in the FBI up until a few years ago. I know he had a 10mm MP5 up until the end. Not sure about right now though. I could ask my cousin, he is a special agent...

The FBI has a annual gathering I go to when I have time. It is a social gathering as well and we get to demo some weapons. The last time I made it there, they had MP5s in 40 S&W. I never asked about the rest of their arsenal, but I know they have changed a lot after the shootout many years ago in Miami. A lot of law enforcement agencies has adapted to the high risk activities.
I think the 40 S&W will do just fine against people. I think the 5.56 mm would do a bit better and there are many options in ammo choices.
Out there in fly-over country...

An M4 in .450 Bushmaster would be my personal choice for door kickin carry. It looks like one of the few calibers that would beat even a 10mm. Basically a really hot .45 that only drops about 6" at 200yds. Falls off pretty quickly after that. I have even seen it touted as a good bear hunting cartridge. Would have to choose the ammo pretty carefully to avoid shooting through the next 4 houses up the block.

I bow to the 10mm in many respects but let's not get ridiculous :P . Nobody with any real knowledge in terminal ballistics would choose 10mm over even 5.56 (other than external factors like weapon size, muzzle blast, etc).

I thought HK geared the UMP platform towards the replacement for the 10mm MP5? Mainly either the .40 S&W or .45 versions?
(The UMP is also available in 9mm too for those not in the know - I THINK the gun is identical in dimensions regardless of caliber aside from the obvious of mags and barrels (???) someone correct me if I am wrong ?)
