Newbie Handguard Length Question

I'm doing a 16" 300blk barrel with a carbine gas system, will a mid-length free float rail fit over a low profile gas block so that it will be hidden.

I'm looking at the yankee hill free float light weight model.

Help an AR build NEWB out.

Thanks!

Ok, let's try again.

It depends on the outer dimensions of the gas block, and the inner dimension of the rail. If you can tell use what block you plan to use, that would help.

You might want to check out other rail options, as well. It's more expensive, but the Daniel Defense M4 rail is lighter, stronger, and is wide enough inside to hide almost any low-profile gas block you can imagine.

Open to suggestions, but don't really want to spend close to $400 on a rail. Would like a Daniel Defense since my upper and BCG is but not in the budget.

I haven't bought either yet so if have a combination that you have used that would be very helpfull.

I was not aware that they varried that much.

If you shop around, you might be able to find a deal on a used M4 rail, especially since theyre a much older design. My SBR would be wearing a 12" M4 rail right now if I had been able to figure out how to make it work on my upper.

.300 gas blocks are out of my area of experience, but I imagine the outer dimensions are barely different than most 5.56 gas blocks.

My AR15 .223 wears a MI 10.3" over a low profile carbine gas system, as seen below:

Black Rifle Forum

edit: My handguards on my .300BLK and .223 rifles are identical except for their length. Both will fit over the top of the low profile gas blocks, the main thing is making sure you get a long enough rail to cover the block. As you can see, the 10" rail does this and then some. I don't think a 7" rail will be long enough for what you want. I'd go 10-13"

Troy TRX Extreme rails are cheaper than the DD and work very well. IMO

I believe that you have to be a little longer than mid (9").
YHM makes a "Specter Length" that may be just what you need.

Unless you have a VERY long gas block, a 9" rail should cover the entire block with length to spare with a carbine gas system. I have a 9" Troy rail on my 10.5" SBR, and the low-profile gas block is well concealed under the tube.

Not correct,.......a mid-length will cover a carbine gas system block just fine.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Nice looking weapon gearhead.
