Burris MTAC or Leupold VX-R?

Has anyone used both the MTAC and the VX-R 1.25x4? I'm looking for a Low Power Variable in the $400 price range and found a used like new VX-R at the LGS for $350 and thought it may be a better option at that price than the MTAC. It is the Hog version and I really don't like the pig plex wording on the reticle but I don't think it would bother me in the long run. How much will the 1.25 of the Leupold slow me down at close range?

The rifle will be used for general practice/training with some coyote hunts mixed in. I also would like to try 3 gun eventually.
