I am STILL looking at what firearm I should purchase next. I have a pretty rounded collection so far. The only glaring hole I see in it is a .22 semi-auto rifle. I really love the looks and reviews of the MP 15-22.

If you were looking to spend $600-$700, what would you buy? Please only mention guns that can be purchased new, because I don't buy used.

I thought about stocking up on components as well, since I reload. It just seems like a new gun would be more fun though.

What say everybody?

If you want a .22LR, get a Marlin Model 60 for under $150 and you can shoot circles around people with M&P15-22s.

You say you are looking for a .22 auto rifle. If you already have a .22 rifle and pistol, you can ignore my post.

If you don't have a .22 rifle and pistol, you do not have a 'rounded collection'. A .22 rifle and pistol should have been the first and second firearms you acquired. Aside from the cheap shooting aspect, a .22 is probably the most versatile firearm ever made. as long as you are not hunting larger animals, a .22 can handle almost any other shooting task. Target shooting is an obvious choice, but also plinking, trick shooting, self-defense (in a pinch), or hunting meat for the pot.

And not buying 'used' means you are missing out on some seriously cool bargains. The best firearms do not have to be new. A Belgium-made Browning A-5 in excellent condition is a work of art that will never be made again. So is a pre-1970's Colt 1911A1. The old pre-1986 Hi-Standard .22 automatic pistols are probably the finest .22 you can buy for under $500. Likewise, the Marlin M39a may well be the best all-purpose .22 rifle that will last several generations. But you will want one made before 2006. Colt and S&W both made excellent quality .22 revolvers. I have a Colt Trooper in .22 that should last several hundred years.

A good .22 does not wear out for a LONG time. The barrel may need de-leading from time to time, but the bores rarely wear out if the steel is decent quality. When is the last time you heard of a Winchester 75 or Remington 513-T needing a spare part except due to accident or mistreatment?

If you already have a .22 rifle and pistol, why not get a .22 upper unit for an AR? the same controls and feel as a normal AR, and change to any of about 30 calibers with just a different upper unit.

The 15-22 is a great rifle and would make a fine choice


If you're looking for something affordable to shoot it also might be worth looking at an AK74. You can pick up an Arsenal SGL31 for about $800. You could then take advantage of the cheap 5.45 ammo, you can pick up 2160 rounds of Russian 7n6 surplus for less than $250.

Go Big or stay home. Be patient, save your money, and get an AR type rifle from one of the top manufacturers. Figure 1k as a decent starting point, but try and save more to really get the cool stuff.

Of course, if you already have one, completely disregard everything I wrote.

Thanks for the ideas everybody! I am processing all of this as I read through the replies. I will stopping by the local fun store on my way home today to browse as well.

I don't mind buying some things used, but firearms is not one of those things. I like to know the entire history behind the gun, where it was shot, what it was shot at, how well it was cared for, etc. I just feel more comfortable buying new.

Tough call, given little info on what you already have and what your tastes run, but were it me, and I wanted to burn $700 on a .22, I'd find a nice S&W mod 41 LNIB (since they don't make them anymore).

Ruger 10-22 are good guns, but I just like the Marlin and the Henrys better.

Some of the .22 LR ARs have good reps, but for the same price you can get a Marlin 60 and a billion rounds of ammo. OK, maybe not quite a billion. . .

Marlin lever action in either .30-30 or .45-70 (depending on if I decide to go practical or absolutely bats#%t crazy overkill)
.44 Magnum Ruger Redhawk
.308 Bolt Action (Remington 700 most likely)
Whichever of #1 I don't get first
Browning (or FN) Hi-Power
1911 - likely a Remington or Colt
AR-15 of some sort (never been much on assault rifles but I'd like to have one). No idea which brand - figure that out when I get ready to purchase.

May never get all of these.

As for a .22 I really like my Ruger 10/22 but the stock is kind of a "youth size" - or it feels that way anyway.

Since you need a .22 rifle, and you mentioned the M&P15, how about an AR with a dedicated 22lr upper? A bit more than an M&P 15-22, but you can always get different uppers to go with it.
